I think I want to plan a trip to Jamaica in a couple months. Starting from scratch. Suggestions, advice, etc.? I guess, to begin with, I need to find a reasonable, cheap place to stay...
I guess I would fly into Kingston?

There is no such thing as a "reasonable" place in Kingston, which is a crime-ridden hellhole at present. You might be better going to Montego Bay or one of the outlying areas instead,
My understanding from my resort trips to Jamaica is that you really don't want to just wander around Jamaica. Kingston has some rough, rough areas. In the tourist havens of Negril and Montego Bay (the other city with an airport), we were not treated well by people who were not working for a tourism related business. YMMV.

I would stay anywhere, just talking about the airport...

Yeah, for sure. I've lived in the Caribbean before, so I have some idea. And I would be traveling with someone...
Yeah, fly into Montego Bay at Sangsters International Airport. Then stay on 7 mile beach in Negril on the west side of the Island. Don't wander out alone at night, just stick to the resort you're staying at until daylight. That, and be careful if you smoke, don't just buy from anyone as it is illegal, and you can negotiate on the price... Don't take rides from strangers, and be smart --Don't smoke with a stranger expecting it to be free, they may want (or demand afterwards) money. Beer at the beach bar's is mostly Red Stripe, Red Stripe Light, Heineken, Miller Lite, and Guiness. And take a tour of the Appleton Rum factory, and maybe some of the waterfalls or something like Rick's Cafe (just don't jump in yourself, alot of people get hurt diving in).
