Hey SG, I'm traveling from NYC to Prague in March! I've never been! I've been doing some research on the interwebs, but I thought I would ask if anyone has any recommendations for happy fun things to do.

1. Leave your camera at home. But a pack of playing cards at the airport. It will have good pictures, and give you something to do on the flight home.

2. Wander by foot. Prague is one of the oldest cities in Europe and it would be sad to speed through it.

3. Stay at a small, family owned hotel. Ask where they go when they go out to eat. Eat there. It will be better and will have fewer tourists.

4. Write a travel journal. Keep train and museum ticket stubs. Tape them to the pages you describe those activities.

I know this is all vague and don't really say anything particular about Prague. To have a good time, keep your eyes open, be polite and respectful, and don't wear white sneakers. They mark you to pickpockets as an American.

And now, I shall express my jealousy by farting in your general direction.

Ask ToothpickMoe. He lived there at one point.

For the most part, you should avoid bars and instead go into the wine cellars frequented by students. Drink absinthe and Czech beer (my favorite is Krusovice). Try the national dish (duck with dumplings). My favorite restaurant there is Velryba (the Whale) on Opatovicka.

Visit John Lennon wall. Watch one of the many very inexpensive classical music concerts put on by the various philharmonics there. Watch some live jazz. The Czech jazz scene is great and has a tradition of avant garde artistic creativity stretching back to the Communist era.

Go to the Jan Hus monument and see the clock in the same square. Be sure to make a wish on Charles Bridge. Visit the Jewish quarter, see Rabbi Loew's grave, and buy yourself a golem souvenir.

Avoid streetwalkers though. Only go to reputable houses of ill repute.

Yup, RedBstrd nailed all the important points. Velryba is great, and if it's still there Bar Bar, in Mala Strana, has excellent salads. Have a beer in the beer garden in Letna park. Go to the miniature Eiffel Tower on Petrin Hill. Walk up to Hradcanska from Mala Strana (one of the steepest hills in town). Eat at the little restaurant under Charles Bridge. Spend as much time as you can drunk. wink

Shit, now I really miss Prague.

I'm heading to Prague in a few weeks and still trying to figure out what to do and where to stay.

Someone was telling me about an old brewery where you can take beer baths in the old fermenting tanks. That sounds like my style!

Is there a particular part of town I should look for a hotel? I can't really do the hostel thing because I will be traveling with my portfolios and other valuables.

You've already ruled out hostels, but let me say that the Czech Inn and Sir Toby's are both excellent. I believe the Czech Inn will also do private rooms, so perhaps that's an option for you after all.

RedBstrd did indeed hit the highlights. Otherwise:

  • There's a ton of strange little art scattered around Prague worth the finding. And some of it not so little, like the giant baby statues crawling over the television tower. The Kafka Museum is also appropriately trippy.
  • There's a lot of very crappy absinth for sale in Czech. Pick your bottle carefully or you're likely to end up with foul swill.
  • Prague Castle is the largest in Europe, having housed more than a few Holy Roman Emperors.
  • Lehka Hlava is one of my three favorite (vegetarian) restaurants in the world. Last time I was there, the bartender had a batch of his own homebrewed midovice (mead liquor) that was particularly stunning.

BUY THE SUBWAY TICKET AND STAMP IT WHEN U GET ON. uNDERCOVER SUBWAY COPS ARE EVERYWHERE.
Krusovice IS AN EXCELLENT SUGGESTION BUT ALSO TRY THE CHERNE (?) PIVO, THE DARK BEER. DELICIOUS. U HOROCHA (THE HIPPO) IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST BARS IN THE WORLD. ASK IF VACLAV IS THERE, HE USUALLY IS. HIS ENGLISH IS EXCELLENT AND HE IS QUITE THE GOOD GUIDE FOR THE PRICE OF A BREW OR TWO HE'LL SHOW YOU SOME GREAT BARS IN THE CITY. BE SURE AND TRY THE NAKLADANY HERMALIN. EXCELLENT WITH YOUR PIVO.
