OK. I am opening a barber shop/ salon, and my town is extremely conservative about signage. I drew up a great logo and it did NOT get approved. They said it was too 'trendy'. I was wondering if anyone could quick show me something that's old school looking-- like 1850s old school. Just like an idea or a font with the words Hair by Eskandalo, and underneath it should say For men and for women. Can anyone help me out really quick? I'd be so grateful! I'm thinking kind of saloon looking.... confused

Well it could help if you gave us some pictures of signage in your town to know what would be acceptable.

Also show us what you did so we can compare.

Notice the gold on red.

Old Man not included.

Again, letters in the window. Chairs outside. It's welcoming.

And don't forget a barber's pole.

Thank you Poptard! The second one is great!

Ok- my thing that I did (crappily)

minus the black background

What they want is something reminiscent of 1850, and in which case, why would there be a shop with a Mexican exclamation if it were that year?

How to make that work..... confused I keep picturing a Mexican Saloon sign. Checking google...

Oooo

This is the outside of the bldg. Mine is the space (there are two) on the left side. Pretend there is a beautiful window with stained glass at the top, with the adress lit up in it. Yeah. It's a stretch, what with the boarded up window and scaffolding but, try and visualize

No offense to you, Seraphine, but your Eskandalo sign looks like Napoleon Dynamite made it. Just saying.
For your building I will suggest Blackletter, Fraktur, or this:

Nothing milks the esoteric design of your building than slightly-damaged gold majuscule lettering against ebony.

I agree with Poptard, that Font would look fantastic on that style of building. Especially with gold lettering.

Hmmmm.... I like it. I kind of want it to pop a bit more though. I like the idea of gold lettering. And it looks masculine enough to avoid coming off as too 'salony'.

It's actually red and white. The color blue is restricted, historically, to apothecaries.

I'm not allowed to have the spinny-tube dealie anyway. State board here requires me to have a barber license if I want a spinny tube dealie. Which is fine because I am doing something completely different from the barber shops of yore.

Which color do you guys like?

The light red seems pretty good. Stands out a bit more.

I like that one too. Thanks for your help! I just spoke with a woman who works for the city and she loves the name and the concept, so it looks good for me! This font is growing on me, but I still love my first one, and so do all of my friends that I asked. Ah well.....

Crimson is best. It is conservative yet beautiful. Demure, even. Will it be against a black BG? If so, have a thin line of gold traced around each edge.
