ive never been, but my mother and best friend have.

when my mom went (granted it was a long time ago) she came back with hoards of fabulous pictures... some of friendly people, and some of beautiful scenery. she says the people there are absolutely wonderful.

im very interested in classics, so technically, i should be prattling off temples and other important locations, but its 7am. so, uh, yeah, go see the parthenon, i hear the architecture is fabulous. wink

I've been...
I took a boat from Israel to Turkey to Cypress to Greece...*bad idea*
BUT...
Greece is awsome. Plan to spend more time on the Islands or deep main land than in Athens...Athens is kind of...well, nasty. Lots of traffic and pollution. Its way crowded and the WAY touristy. The Acropolis can take up to three hours of waiting to see. And guess what. They look like they do in the postcards...just bigger in person.

The Islands range from extremly gay to wild party to quaint. You kinda have to ask yerself what you wanna do/see. I'm not a big ruin/old church/'this is where this guy did this' traveler. I am more interested in visiting the little towns and watching the rows of old men that sit around all day and drink oozo (sp?). Nasty drink I tell ya. Like drinking Good n' Plenty. I spent most of my time on a rented Vespa cruising around stopping in all the open air markets.

I liked Rhodes, Ios and Andros but on the Italian side, Corfu was my favorite...so pretty. Losts of Olive trees and wildflowers everywhere...very chill and very uplifting.

By the way...the boat from Greece to Italy is like 40$....its a cool trip...just be careful...it takes you to Bari in Italy...one of the worst thieving spots I visited in the entire 8 months of touring...

Hope that helps...

one of my earliest memories was meeting my first transsexual on the island of mykonos. so you should go there and report back on the nightlife. also all the ancient sites, the acropolis and so on, are amazing and worth going to. do not shy away from the "touristy" spots. while it is my inclination, as someone who lives in a tourist-packed city, to avoid other tourists when traveling, do not do this while in greece. otherwise you will miss the experience of touching the ground where the very first tragedies were acted out in front of an audience.

it's been many years since i've been to greece, but i remember a few things:

the color of the mediterranean.
an old woman cleaning the stomach of a goat by beating it against the rocks by the beach.
all of the white stucco houses.
tearing around in a rented dune buggy.
cats, so many cats.

I remeber one little town i wandered into...there was this great open air market, it was so perfect. Surrounded by the traditional white stucco houses with blue shutters and begendvillia (sp?)...anyways, they had this huge row of pigs hanging in the open air market and there were no joke twenty to thirty cats lined up under them jumping and swatting the piggies. What's the deal with the Greek and the cats? They really are everywhere.

I once again recommend Crete. Very pretty.
I once again tell you to avoid Ouzo. Nasty as nasty can be.

I was there a few years ago to visit a friend that just came and visited me. We hit the island of Paros and it was pretty cool if a little dead night life wise. Get a scooter and go trippin' around the island(s) - whichever one(s) you end up on.

I just love the Souvlaki but for those who don't eat the oink, it's pretty much out of he question. I had some made with bok in NY when I was out there in August but it just wasn't the same. Heh, I guess I just wanted to use the new emoticons biggrin

Here's another vote for visiting Rhodes.

My mom and dad stayed there for a month two years ago year in the spring. My dad said it was the most laid back of the larger islands, without as many of the "creepy British tourists" (no offence), and very relaxing. My dad even found someone to give him sailing lessons, and ended the trip by sailing a big yacht back to Athens. His instructor, whom they met at a marina, was a young guy who was also on Greece's sailing team, and about my age. During the spring, before the big boating season begins, lot's of rich people pay to have their boats moved from one island to another before they come in the summer, so this guy had to sail a big 40ft yacht somebody owned from Rhodes to Athens. Since my dad was ready for it, he was invited to pilot the boat, and they sailed straight through the night (the pictures of my dad doing this are so unbelievable to me), and afterwards my dad had earned his international sailing licence. Otherwise, there's no way my dad would ever afford a yacht, so for him it was a dream come true.

And, on this recommendation, my sister and her friend went to Rhodes last summer and had a terrific time. Stayed by the beach, melting in the heat.
