for those of you who live in the portland area, do you have any idea what the job market is like for a graphic designer or artist? i just finished up college and i've been thinking of moving...after seeing how many great people there are in portland, i'm considering it if i could possibly find a job...any suggestions? and is it expensive to live there? atlanta is sooo expensive!

the market is tough here, but the market is tough everywhere.
cost of living isn't too bad, especially if you're willing to live outside of the trendier neighborhoods. i lived in reno up until a few months ago, and prices were higher there - at least as far as housing goes. it's way cheaper than SF, LA, or Seattle - and probably most of the East Coast, I'd imagine.

Yeah, the market is tough. I've been searching for jobs for a while and I havn't really seen any graphic designer positions. I had a friend who lived here for a couple of years and couldn't find any decent work as a graphic artist. Oregon has the highest unemployment rate in the country right now at somewhere between 6-7%. I don't want to dissuade you from coming to Portland though because it s an awesome city and I LOVE Oregon. You will have fun here if you come, but just don't expect to find the job you are looking for. If you're not nitpicky and want to work in the food service industry (waiter) you'd be set.
I've been unemployed for about 4 months now - I really just started looking though. I figured I'd enjoy at least half the summer on the dole. It's pretty ugly. I'm either over or under qualified for everything
