That's my question. I'm thinking about getting dreads but I don't know where to go. I live on Long Island but will travel to the city or whatever. Let me know if you guys know of anything. Spanks!!
this is how i did it, i commited a crime( or was at least accused of it) in l.a. and i had to leave town on the run, broke, so i hitched and hopped trains til i got to nyc and lived in abandoned buildings or cardboard boxes in thomkins square (this was back in the 80's) and i never took my beanie off the whole time and finally, after 4 months, i helped open a squat and i finally had a room of my own, so i took off my beanie and my hair had become like a big beaver tail, so i sat in my new room for a few days with a bootle of tee tree oil and seperated as much of it as i could and began twisting my hair into seperate pieces (or dreadlocks, i guess) and i kept twisting them nervously for about 12 years...
if you want dread extensions, check out the hairpolice. http://www.hairpolice.com. they are in nyc a lot. also i'd suggest just going to livejournal and doing a search on dread extensions and you'll find a few communities, and they will have lots of good recommentions for people.
if you want natural dreads, do not go to a dreadtician. they will just perm the shit out of your hair, and that's not the point of having dreads. there is no shortcut to having a head of real dreads, it just takes a long time and lots of love.
check out http://www.knottyboy.com and http://www.dreadheadhq.com for tips on how to dread your own hair. if you want to buy dreadwax i like knottyboy wax a lot. dreadheadhq.com has really cool animated gifs telling you how to work on knotting your roots and other dread challenges.
