I'm coming to visit. I'll be in town February 1st to the 4th to finally see some Penguins home games and have sex with the team.

Wait, what?

If anyone would like to suggest some things to see and places to visit for someone who's never been, I'd like to hear what you've got to say. I'd take this to the group, but I just don't think I can squeeze out an essay on pierogies. wink

pierogies are on sale this week at meijer and I have a coupon.

In other news, make sure you go shopping on East Carson. Thai Me Up is a good place to eat if it's still around. Also that place NicoleLee works at that I don't remember the name of. But rasher is bacon and bangers are sausage cuz you get banged with a sausage. Yup.

Thai Me Up is still there, I walked past it yesterday.

Sushi Two is a Japanese restaurant that I like. Fatheads has a large beer selection, and big sandwiches called "headwiches." They're usually kind of busy though.

There is a new place called Buckhead Saloon that I haven't been to yet. They are supposed to have good pizza. It has a ski lodge/cabin theme, and they have bands.

There are the museums.

Oh, and Mad Mex is popular.

And I mite be around too, if I get a call from the PGH Airport Marriott telling me I have a job. House shopping is fun...

Oh, and if you are into sports, there is a sports museum in the strip district. I can't vouch for the quality of it, since I never went, and I'm not into sports (other than billiards and extreme sports.)

For Thai food I'd recommend Thai Cuisine on Liberty Avenue rather than Thai Me Up in the Southside. I think the food is better. If you go for a good burger or steak, check out Tessaro's (also on Liberty).

The Warhol is great, as are the other Carnegie Museums. I may actually be at a Flickr Pittsburgh meet-up at Club Havana in Shadyside on February 2. They're a fun crowd. What sort of stuff do you like to do?

Don't worry if you can't write an essay on pierogies yet, you'll be able to after your visit.

Thanks, guys. Pretty much the only days I'll be absolutely free are Friday and Saturday evening, so I may just walk around with no actual plans, stopping at whatever looks interesting. It's a bit weird going to a city I've never been to, where I don't know anyone.

Apparently I'm staying in a huge, fuck-off hotel so if Pittsburgh ain't my speed, I'll just stay inside. wink

If you bowl, Pittsburgh is the town for you, where I found about 3 bowling alleys in Tampa, I can think of 12 off the top of my head in Pittsburgh. Carson Sreet HAS to have a bar that is interesting...somewhere. I heard a statistic once that there are 42 bars in about 6 blocks, and that is just on the main drag, I think there is about 3 times that if you count the little ones a few blocks off. Oakland isn't a bad place to find some fun, there is a cool little huka bar there called The Sphinx Cafe. Great atmosphere, but they rape you on drinks, and there is a one drink minimum, but on the flip side, there is a 2 dollar cork charge if you bring your own, so me and my friends bring a bottle of captain. The wait staff there is SUPER awesome. If you go on friday night, ask for Lulu and tell her that you know Nick and Loren. There are 2 carnegie museums, natural history and art, and they are connected. They are also in Oakland. If you are interested in anything like that, I would recommend it, it take me about 5 hours to walk through it though, but I stop and look at EVERYTHING!! There is also the Frick Museum, though that is in a not so wonderful part of town, and it small, but it is free. There are 2 science centers that I know of, but one is far more popular than the other. Carnegie (have you noticed that the Carnegies were really important in Pittsburgh?) Science Center is downtown by the brand new(kinda) stadiums. It is a pretty cool place if you like science, though I don't know what the specials are this weekend. In the strip district and farther east of the city, there are some really interesting resteraunts, like church brew works. It is a resteraunt/brewhouse that used to be a church. In fact they set up at least one machine on the altar. There are several theatres to go to this weekend, but some of them are pricey. Anything downtown in the culture district is pricey, southside is much less so, and in my opinion, the southside shows are better. There is paintball, laser tag, Dave and Busters, LOTS of shopping, many places to eat.
There is lots to do, but after you are here for a while, it gets really dull. I am free Saturday night if you wanted to hang somewhere. Oh, one last thing, since it is your first time in Pittsburgh, "ya haf to warsh dahn a Primanti's sandwich with a nice cold Iron City" They have ok sandwiches there, but they are nothing to write home about. Rubberband=gumband, pop=soda, jumbo=bologna, and I am sure there are some I forgot. Can this count as my essay for the group?

What's the mass transit like? Can you get to downtown type areas from the airport fairly easily? I'm coming for training June 25th-29th, but I don't want to be stuck at my hotel every night.

There is a bus that goes from the Airport into the city and through the Oakland area before heading back towards the airport. It's the 28X. Once you're in town or in Oakland, you can pretty much catch a bus anywhere else. Buses don't run very late. For instance, the last bus for the airport leaves Oakland around 10:45 p.m. Here's the site for PAT (Port Authority Transit).

A word on cabs: In Pittsburgh, you have to ring dispatch and have them send you a cab. You can't just flag one down in most parts of town. The one obvious exception is the airport, where you can easily find one outside of baggage claim. If you have any other questions about Pittsburgh, just ask.

Oh, one more thing to do in Pittsburgh. We have a really great zoo. I'd only refer the bold to the zoo in February, but it should be pretty nice in June. I actually like going when it's colder or rainy, as you have the whole place to yourself. We also have the National Aviary.

For those into architecture (and with time for a good drive), there's Fallingwater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

If you want a great view of the city, you can visit Mount Washington. There are multiple restaurants designed to take advantage of the view. If you're there, you might as well ride the incline.

Cash, if you ever make it to the 'Burgh to see your friend, feel free to look me up, too.

Thanks for the reminder about the zoo and the FLW house. I knew about them but completely blanked since I haven't been to PA since I was 3.

This is so much great info. And if anyone wants to get a drink while I'm in town, let me know. I will likely be exhausted since I'm flying 5,000 miles to get there, but I'll be bored as hell after 5pm each day since I'll be away from my guys. smile

I'm going to be coming home (well, back to my parent's house) to Pittsburgh for the rest of May - if anyone wants to get together, about the only thing I can offer is crashing a Pittsburgh wedding (my cousins) - I can't promise perogies, but I can promise a cookie table. smile

My recommendations?
Andy Warhol - my friend and I got kicked out for playing with the art, and there's a cool photo booth in the basement. smile
The Carnegie Museums - I love natural history museums
Science Center! - Sometimes my dad does engineering presentations for little kids there, I love it!
Phipps Conservatory - I loved the Chihuly (sp?) exhibit
The Zoo and Aquarium - always fun. smile
Pittsburgh Public Theatre - I'm a theatre buff and love this place, but I can also recommend going to CLO or Pittsburgh Opera as well if you're into that type of stuff!

Also some good places to pop on down to:
- Station Square
- The Strip District
- The inclines! Dusquesne Incline site
- The Point

I'm sorry this is so long - hope it helps your visits everyone! biggrin
