Why do people care if people repost old thread ideas?

Its kind of funny because the same people write the same posts all the time about how they hate people writing the same threads all the time.

When are they gonna get it in thier skull that people are new and will post the same things they were thinking about when they were new?

For me its cute seeing the new people bumble around a bit and the kinda new people help them out.

Maybe they just feel like bullshitting or maybe they just want a new point of view on something.

Its all pretty harmless isnt it?

It's our SG member check and balance system.

Otherwise EVERY week the same questions would be asked by new members, "Who likes big boobs? I love them!!!" Really who want's to read that stuff repeatedly.

I encourage bumping old threads if someone is interested in a topic. They usually get more information on a subject and can then ask a better question.

There's like 15 other threads like this one, maybe you should have just bumped one of them?

For what it's worth, I agree with Viva. People need to get over the fact that there's a limited number of things to talk about. If you don't feel like discussing something again, don't discuss it.

You could see how it might start to grate ancient members of a community, especially if a new thread on the same topic is brought up bi-weekly, where a gentle hint to at least attempt to skip through a couple of pages of threads would probably suffice.

Generally, though, it is pretty harmless and I'm never the type to post stuff like "the search button is your friend" or whatever. I'll just contribute or ignore it.

It's just that it's an Internet faux pas that seems to get on peoples tits.

Because there is nothing about it that is language used to express something opposite its literal meaning, or marked by incongruity between what is expected and what actually occurs?

Wow I guess I have a learning lesson here then.

I always took irony as saying or writing something that was incongruant. Like saying you want people not to repeat things that were already said but saying it 200 times.

I guess its just retarded?

"Isn't it ironic how old school members chastise the new ones for starting new threads on old topics when it's fairly harmless and they should mind their own business?"

Yeah, not irony.

But I can agree with the sentiment from the perspective of someone new.

I think it's a combination of things. One is just old schoolers showing off how many threads they remember, or just being dicks for being a dick's sake -- which I'm certainly a fan of doing. But some people read into the act of starting a new thread on an obvious topic a lack of caring for the community, or an arrogance in saying "Yeah, you may have started a thread about anal sex, but fuck you, I'm gonna start one too."

And I don't think people mean that you should know what threads were discussed six months ago. On many topics, people mean that you should know (or look up) what threads were discussed yesterday.

So when they say "use the search function" they're not saying, "You should know what we talked about two years ago." They're saying "There was already a thread about this this morning."

I actually think the worst part about people saying "use teh search function" is that "teh search function" isn't really that good.

I dont know man, Ive been in groups where people talk about once a week and someone asks something that I havent even noticed a thread about and they get all jumped over for reposting.

Heaven forbid you join the Vegas site and ask what is a good club or whatever.

I'm sorry they were rude to you, but did you honestly think that in a group about Vegas, there hadn't been already been a thread about good clubs?

And in that thread, a bunch of people gave a bunch of answers that they're going to have repeat for your thread, or otherwise you're likely to go off saying how everyone is so elitist in the Vegas group and won't answer the new guy...

Keith I hear your perspective, but it's easy to forget that N00bs look at the site through a different lens than older members. They don't have the context. That and I think half the motivation for people starting threads is not only to get information, but also to start a conversation. This isn't a reference library, it's a community.
