The reason to get rid of it is to improve the quality of the boards and cut down on the amount of pointless drivel.

Perhaps we can go back to the old style of having multiple levels rather than exact post count.

Example:
0-100 Newbie
101-500 First Base
501-1000 Second Base
1001-1500 Third Base
1501-2000 Home run
2000+ Diatastic

...or let users choose if its even on there or not.

I'm not pointing any fingers here but some users have got a gazzillion posts nad they've only been members for a few months. Some of the old skool have got, like, 27 posts.

Even if you have grades or levels or whatnot, people are going to post like mad to get the "cool" label. The "Member Since" and the person's posts tell me more about their "status" than their comment count.

Edited to say: I really don't care either way. I just wouldn't miss it were it to go. tongue

Completely agree, but I like looking at my own comment count just to see how active I am on the site. Like, if I didnt have a comment count telling me that I've made 300+ comments in the last 2 days I wouldn't have believed it.

Who cares? It's a message board on the internet. No matter what you do, you will always get people posting mind-fuckingly retarded drivel for no good reason. And like, actually, post counts do give you an indication of someone's role on the boards. If someone has 2000 posts and they've been a member for a month, odds are they're a bit kooky. Yep, kooky. Whilst on the other hand, Sorcha has 18258, which is so many that if you collected all her posts, you'd genuinely have a novel (albeit a presumably plot-less one - unless Sorcha's posts have incorporated some sort of subtle narrative, which could well be the case).

Deadset mate, if you've posted 300+ comments in two days, you need to put more in to your comments. There is no way to justify posting that much apart from a love of posting random things to the internet.
Which, I suppose, is pretty justified.

Carry on.

So, if there's an extra line of space, what could be put there?

I suggest a "Single and lookin for lurve" icon, or a "single and not lookin for lurve thank you very much" icon or a "married, but hey, you kno" icon, or a "not telling icon".

EDIT to say: actually, this idea sucks and sucks hard. In the history of sucky ideas this is one of the suckiest,. Ignore it. And then mock me.

You're right. It wouldn't be a novel, but it wouldn't be mindless drivel either. I don't like the post count, so I don't like upping it. In fact, because it's so high, I've been hesitant about posting in journals and groups and so on. I don't want it to go any higher. It's embarrassing.

Or maybe the fact that I'm a member of 45 groups and have several friends whom I only converse with through thier journals had something to do with it too whatever

maybe hide the count, only the member posting can see it?
but the would just lead to more pointless posting "My count is now a zillion!"

do away with the count all together?

make the number pointless with a random number generator?

the ability to block the post crazy blowhards?
if they're posting so damn much, how could it be worth reading?

something like this based on posts per month/week. Changing weekly up or down depending on the count
Example:
0-100 Newbie
101-500 Active
501-1000 Unemployed
1001-1500 No sex life
1501-2000 No life
2000+ Complete shut in

or we could just not worry about it...
