Go to your main Profile Page. In the upper right hand corner of your profile blurb there is a button that says 'EDIT' - click on it to change your alias and profile layout.
If the name you want to change it to is taken, try a different spelling or add an underscore.
^^^ This always confused me. The key is to do exactly what the FAQ says. That is, click the Edit button when you're on the Main tab, not the Profile tab, of your profile page.
curious to know, if you change your user name is the old one instantly up for grabs for other people to use? or is it reserved/linked to your account still?

Are you sure? I thought once you change your name to something else, it frees it up for anyone else to use.
That's something we do in chat sometimes is have what can best be described as "nickname wars" where someone will parody the nickname of someone who's in there, then someone else will change their name to what the parador (is that a word? person who is parodying the first person) usually uses.
Like, for example if I changed my name to Morrican then SpaceHeep could change his to bepps and I'd have to wait for him to change his back before I could change back to my usual name. In fact that's why I'm currently bepps instead of beppo. I changed my name some time ago and (I assume) some joker took beppo. It could have been a new member registering it though, so I haven't really done anything about it. It's one of the risks you take doing that and if you don't want someone to take your name, don't change it.
I've heard that you can send a help request to have your name changed to something that is currently taken by an inactive account but haven't done so myself. I would assume that's totally up to the discretion of the staff member who does it. I've seen where people ask to have the underscore taken off of their name and it has happened.
But that was my understanding, once you change your name, what you were using before is available for anyone. Otherwise I could reserve every name there is and no one could register a new name when they sign up.
