Whisper in Chat?

I've seen it mentioned but I cant figure out how to whisper in chat. Anyone?

Put your lips right next to their ear and speak very softly.

When you first open the chat window there's a gray text message that tells you how, it says something like
* * * * * * ** * * To send a private message type <nameofuserhere> * * * * * * * * * *



so it'd be like <sux0r> although that sounds delightful and sexual, that's not quite right
