I don't think threads should expire if they're still active, but if they've been inactive for a long time then sure, why not.
I mainly think that the SG threads layout is to blame. If the thread topics were better displayed, or ordered in a different way, (such as put into subcategories), it might be easier to locate the right one.

i've been on sg a while and still dont get the boards...
i attempt to use the search fuction, but there is no way to sort my date (as far as i can see.. please correct me if i'm wrong) therefore making bumping old or less revelant threads an issue.
maybe the google search is better? advice for experienced board users welcome

If they are inactive, just get rid of them. Say for instance, if inactive for a year.
But think of all the lols-worthy and intelligent posts that would cease to exist if you did that. Locking means people can read the thread, but not bump it.
I've had quite a larf going back into ancient threads. There's some real good stuff buried in there. I have, so far, resisted the urge to post and bump in hopes of avoiding the angry wrath of the keepers of arcane knowledge and the defenders of the search function. I've learned a lot about some of you!
Subscribe to my blog to learn more about "Project Sumac." I'm so excited. It's going to be awesome. My mistress will be pleased.
