Click the eyeball next to the checkbox. That doesn't affect your preferences, just what's visible at the moment you're looking at it. The eyeballs are basically the opposite of the checkboxes, for the purposes of viewing, but not for saving preferences.

You can only see threads you've commented on, so if no one has commented on a thread no one will ever see it unless they click on the group just to see if there may be new threads to comment on.
I'm going out on a limb here, but it's possible we might add new events into the system as we go forward. Until then, the "Groups" link at the top of the page still works the same way it always has.
Even more nice! (if you're talking about get-together-type events. (Hookup events could definitely use a bit more publicity))

This has also crashed my browser three times. And I can't save any changes because the page has an error.
