I did a quick search and didn't find anything about this-

I'd like to suggest "edit" and/or "delete" options on testimonials I've left for people. for instance if someone I once respected turns out to be a total douchebag, I don't want to continue to endorse them.

has anyone else, in hindsight, wished they could delete (or edit) a testimonial?

also, I know I'm not the only one who spaced out and wrote a journal comment in the 'testimonial' spot by accident

I think there used to be a delete option but maybe I'm confused and you were only ever allowed to delete your own testimonials.

I don't remember... apparently I'm the only one who thinks it's a great idea wink

I am with you. I think this is a great idea. At least the ability to edit.

I think the whole feature is kinda superfluous and unnecessary. I don't ever really read anyone else's testimonials -- it just seems like a good way to stroke someone's ego.

I'd move to just remove it altogether -- that would solve the problem of having to change your testimonials later and save people the mistake of posting comments there by accident. I think less clutter is always good.

Testimonials, though, are a good way to judge someone's character when they are applying to private groups - especially regional groups. I am for the ability to edit testimonials you have left.

I disagree. People delete anything bad.

And upon further thought, I'm a bit worried about the opportunity to abuse such a feature enhancement. I imagine it will cause more babysitting for moderators.

I think this is a good discussion though. I am interested to see how and why people use the feature. It's really never done anything but cause me grief.

People do delete everything bad. Some wear bad testimonials with twisted pride.

Some people don't realize they've gotten bad testimonials.

Hence my reticence to enable an 'edit' option. I doubt that the OP would actually change a testimonial to something degrading or insulting but I do not have the same faith in the rest of the community.

saying something nice about a friend is hardly "superfluous and unnecessary" jeez. whatever

seeing a lot of positive comments (versus only one or two) about someone definitely tells something about them, even if someone does delete the less than flattering ones. it also gives an idea that the person is active in the community, also a sense of who they interact with, etc.

It's a valuable feature and would be even more valuable if there was a way to edit/delete testimonials you've left in the past. if someone changes a testimonial in your profile and you don't like it you can always delete it yourself, I'm not seeing why it would need babysitting by moderators

I don't really see a need for an 'edit' function, except for a 15-minute edit window (as with comments) that enables you to double-check and catch mistakes. If you've changed your mind about a person you can always leave them a new testimonial.

A 'delete' option makes sense, though, for the reasons given by the OP - if someone turns out to be a jerk, it would be nice to be able to withdraw your recommendation of them.

After reading everyone's testimonials in this thread I still think it's pretty useless. They range from very personal to silly and really don't let me know anything about the person. Although, after reading all of these, I'd imagine there are quite a few people that have been around long enough that would probably like to go and delete/change some things they've written as well.

I'm kinda surprised some of the posters in theis thread haven't pruned the testimonials left for them either.

To be really useful in the manner that the linguist mentioned, I'd prefer something akin to the was conusmating did it... 83 people like this person 4 do not.

I personally disagree. I think that while people will always delete negative testimonials, they won't delete good testimonials. So they do serve as a way (albeit not a great one) of judging someone's character.

Plus, they're a permanence on the main user's page - if anyone wants to declutter that page, I'd rather see the pictures line go, which in a lot of cases consists of pics uploaded to the individual's attachment folder rather than anything that adds to the community aspect of the site. And yes, they do stroke the person's ego; and that's nice.

No criticism against SG v4.2 / v4.0, as I think it is lovely, and have said that for a while, but people didn't post testimonials by accident half as much on SG 3.x.

this is a good point. the feature has remained pretty incidental ever since it arrived... I didn't start the thread to discuss page layouts, or to be defending the testimonial feature as 'important' and/or 'useful' (I caught myself doing that above) in fact I don't think it's an important feature at all (though it has some value). I'm simply suggesting that (since it's there) it would be greatly improved with an edit/delete option

Just get rid of testimonials. They are stupid. No one really needs to "vouch" or whatever on someone profile. IF they want in a regional group have someone in the group vouch for them.

It's like when people sign your cast, but it is a cast you wear forever. You just wanna show it off.
