What does the "Flag" Button do??

I'm afraid to push it in case it's like "report this person for being a dick"

The flag button is there to inform moderators of a comment made by member this falls outside the Terms of Service provided by the site.

If you click it you will be asked why you are reporting it, you'll fill out a little form and it basically goes to an email system that notifies one of the moderators.

The moderators then read the e-mail, laugh because you're so thin skinned and then pass the e-mail around to everyone at SGHeadquarters so that they can all make fun of you behind your back.

No.Not Really.

It's not there because your opinion is different from someone's opinion, it's there to prevent personal attacks, racist remarks or other such things of that nature. It basically brings the attention of the moderator's to a specific post.

DevilsReject is correct -- it's there to help make SG a better place. We moderators and staff members can't possibly read every single post around here, so if you see something seriously out-of-line, just click the flag button.

If we don't feel the comment is outside the general rules of SG, you'll get a little message telling you your flag was ignored. The person you flagged won't ever know you flagged their post.

However, we decide the post needs to be dealt with, a few different things can happen.

If we think it's out-of-line but not TOO awful, we might send a private message to the person asking them to clean up their act (and if we're not to busy we might drop you a note telling you we did that). We might give the person an official warning, which gets marked down in our big black notebook of people to keep an eye on.

If it's a really awful post or a repeated offense, we might revoke the person's posting privileges (referred to as "zotting" -- a zotted person can't join or read groups or blogs, message people, or post comments anywhere on the site).

It it's really, really, REALLY out of line, we might delete that person's account entirely (sometimes known as "the uberzot").

Luckily, even with the community as large as it is, there aren't many posts that deserve flagging. smile

It's a pity you can't flag posts in groups...

PM the group owner. The group owner is usually considered the moderator of the group, i haven't actually seen a whole lot of moderator action in groups, but as a group owner, if even one member was uncomfortable with something said in one of my groups, i would definitely do something about it.
