I'm going to stick around but I'm not happy about it...

I still love 2.0-3.0 the most.

Agreed. I'm sure I will get used to this. But I don't think it will be either quick or painless.

the fact that we can get used to it doesn't mean it's an improvement. the way I see it, they took away our corvette and gave us a neon. some people are all "damn, quit bitching! they just gave you a car!" and, while I'm sure I'll get used to driving this cheap, reliable car which does everything a car is supposed to do, I still miss the corvette. the corvette was awesome.

Me too. That just made what we have now look so much better. Not that I have a problem with SG 4.0, I actually like it a lot, but compared to the old sites it's just mindblowing.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but whatever.

I have trouble understanding the people who get SO upset over a new feature or a change in the way you comment on sets, a redesign, whatever, and threaten to cancel their membership over it.

User-friendliness is an essential component of anything, if the producer wants people to pay for it. But honestly, canceling your membership because a box pops up asking you to comment on a set (which you can just close or turn off in your settings anyway)? That strikes me as whiny and nitpicky. As demonstrated with this last redesign, staff DOES listen to the constructive criticism and DOES make changes accordingly. It took me a while to get used to things too, but I would never give up the high-quality perve material here, nor the community, just because I hate pink or it takes a few more clicks to get to my friends threads. But that's because I love the community here. I guess it all depends on your priorities.

Couple points:

Most people don't know they have the option to turn it off.
Based on the overwhelming number of "I loved it" comments, I'd say it is getting in the way for a lot of people. And for those who frequent the boards, all the "I loved it"s are overwhelming the active topics and "your topics".
It's not the end of the world, but it is harder to sift through and find new threads. Makes the board less appealing to spend some time on.

well, I don't think anyone was here for the color scheme... but I think some people feel that the changes have weakened the community, and made the sets more difficult to find and navigate.

It's called opportunity cost. There are many different things competing for my time, and anything that makes one of them less enjoyable makes it more likely that it will be replaced with something better.

For instance, the last 20 minutes I've spent saying "motherfucker" over and over trying to get this post to fucking work while staring at that little spinning circle thing is a negative that my life would have been better without.

Flame her!! She's a witch!

Sorry. Back to the topic at hand. I've complained about a bunch of things with the new design, and some of them have actually been fixed. Not like I'm taking credit, since a lot of other people complained about them too. There are still a bunch of things that bug me. I realize that no website will ever be perfect in my eyes, since everyone has their own little wants.

But I'm tired of people posting messages saying that they're cancelling their membership because of the site design.

If you're going to cancel your membership, just do it. I don't care! Send a message to staff and tell them. I can't imagine that very many other members (and SG's) who have no power over the changes really give a damn.

I also always wonder how many of these people actually go ahead and cancel. I'd be surprised if it was as high as 10%. WHat always gets me the most is the people who say things like "I'd cancel but I have several months left". Then I guess the changes aren't so horrid if you keep coming back.

on the topic of how easy the site is to use my fiance ruddy_L has just joined the site and I had to sit down with her and explain how to get around the site, post comments etc... That to me highlights the usability problems of the site. There should be no need to have to explain to someone how to use a web site, if you have to do that then the site isn't usable. It's as simple as that.

I've said this in another thread, but - yes. The board page (which includes the individual board previews and the "Your Topics" and "Active Topics" section) is basically useless at this point. If you're like me and used to comment on sets before it was essentially mandatory the "Your Topics" section is now "How The Sets You Commented on 2 Years Ago Are Doing" section, and the "Active Topics" is now the "Which Set is Getting The Most Hits" section.

It's funny how one bad decision can effectively ruin the user experience. As Bill said, at this point the fuckedupedness that "I loved it!" has imposed on the boards prevents me from using them. That's the bottom line, really.

There are plenty of people who have joined up since the most recent change and have figured out how to use the site all by themselves. I got help requests all the time back with the last version of the site from people who didn't know that groups existed, or couldn't figure out how to post comments or use the "reply" feature, or couldn't figure out how to make their profile public; people had all manner of problems with things I thought were second nature. The fact that your fiance couldn't figure out how to use the site without your help doesn't necessarily mean the site isn't usable. How do you know she would have been able to figure out the last site just fine? Lots of other people couldn't.

I'm not saying the last site was perfect and I don't hold to the view that this site is the devil in web site form. But from a usability point of view it was a lot easier to use than this one particualy for the less tech minded

I agree that she might have figured it out on her own, but knowing her quite well I also know she would have given up long before then.

Dude. Thousands and thousands and thousands of people have fucking figured out how to use this version of the site. Seriously. Yes, really.

At this point you just sound like you're whining. There is nothing "technical" about this website that you have to be "tech minded" in order to use the basic functions.

Exactly they've had to figure it out. Why should someone have to figure out how to use a site? That's my point I expect to go to a site and be able to use it's functions with out having to figure it out.

If this site was put through usability testing it would fail, it's as simple as that and I'm not the only person to point this out.

As I've said in other threads I don't hate the new site I just wish it had more testing before it went live.

People are canceling their membership because of new changes to the site? Ok i'll admit that i hate the navigation qualities of the new site...but i'm not going to have a cry about it and then stomp out of here. I just look at it as "You don't get everything you want..so uhh live with it".

I think you guys are having a semantics argument. I don't think Shalome meant that people are having to "figure out" how to use the site the way you had to explain it to your fiancee. There are tons of people who got accounts after the new site went up who are having absolutely no trouble using it.

I didn't have to "figure out" how to use this version of the site any more than I had to "figure out" how to use SG 2.0 when I first got my account. However, there are always going to be people, no matter how user friendly your website is, no matter how many big red letters or explanations you have on it, no matter how simple and clear and fast-loading things are, who can't use the site without someone explaining things to them. Your finance might have needed just as much explaining done for her had she gotten her account before the new site went live.

Me, I'm just glad I wasn't the help person anymore when the new site went live. Holy moly, the anger she must have had to deal with! It would have been too much for tiny me.

It used to be really difficult to explain what SG was. It existed before MySpace, before Digg, before most alt-porn websites. It didn't look or feel like anything else, so it was hard to compare it to anything.

I don't have that problem much anymore.

This site has a lot of things going on. You have the community aspect, the boards, all the profile pages for the public members, and oh yeah the naked chick galleries too. It's only natural that you're going to have to figure out how to get around. Even the smallest of forum sites has a learning curve. I'm not belittling what you have said, I'm just saying that it's kinda weird to expect that you wouldn't need to "figure out" a site like this. Or at least to have get used to it at first. smile
