Could we just get it over with and say that Glenn Beck is causing all the wars around the world and is standing in away of world peace. I do like it when demigods kick it old school and she also made a strong case for semi-free speech.

Ha, I read a story through Google News earlier today that goes so well with this.

Apparently, Beck feels that the absence of god in schools is the reason there are crimes..

That's almost as stupid as comparing Obama to Hitler.

So you don't agree with this?

Beck suggests, "The reason why America is not as happy as it was in 1950 or 1920 or whenever, 100 years ago, is because our priorities are wrong, but it has nothing to do with exploiting the planet and has everything to do with losing faith in God."

um, I said that I don't agree with that point that the reason the beating and stomping to death of a high school student was because there wasn't God in peoples lives. I am not a Mormon like Beck and I think RudieCantFail can back me up in saying us Quakers aren't big in thinking God needs to be in the forefront of peoples lives. Also I hope this thread wont turn into another "do you agree with ____ statement Glenn Beck said" since I already said when I do listen to him its usually for Entertainment when I am doing statistics homework. smile

You're right. The point of your thread was to show that Bette Midler made a dumb comparison; one that even Joy Behar called her on.

And who was seriously watching this? What's next, Fran Drescher asking Liza Minelli what she thinks about Rush Limbaugh?

But this does show a trend of blaming Glenn Beck for violence that has been commented in the United States.

I think I wouldn't mind Glenn Beck so much if most of his listeners were like you. I think maybe if his show was on Comedy Central people wouldn't be making these comments in the first place.

You're connecting dots that aren't there.

Nobody is saying that Glenn Beck's angry rhetoric is causing mild mannered people to kill each other, and it's silly to compare his tirades to Rwandan demagoguery. It's this kind of ridiculous black and white comparison that the wingnuts on your side of the aisle are doing to Obama.

However, people are asking whether this rhetoric pushed a clearly ill person to commit a heinous crime. And if that's the case, he has to think long and hard about whether he can continue to portray this "clown" persona in such a careless fashion. Because let's be honest here, it's not what you are or what you claim to be, it's what you're perceived to be.

This is a valid argument, and you're attempting to stuff it with straw by connecting it to zanier arguments; a typical right wing approach.

Beck seems to see himself as the next Paul Revere, trying to start the next American revolution. I respect his right to free speech, but I do wonder how inflammatory his rhetoric will be before some real violence happens. He will, of course, deny any responsibility, just as Bill O'Reilly did with the death of George Tiller. But I personally suspect that if we ever hear a report about shots being fired at President Obama, the assailant will either be a Neo-Nazi or a Glenn Beck fan.

Meh. I don't think Glenn Beck going to cause genocide. Bette Middler is an reactionary. I give as much as shit about what she thinks as I do Chuck Norris. I have more respect celebrities who keep their political opinions more nuanced than dipshits like the aforementioned.

Regardless, the man-child should still go home.

Why would anyone pay attention to a woman who is said to have snorted coke off John Holme's dork. Or Bette Midler for that matter.

Both of these people are show-clowns. She's a Las Vegas entertainer at this point. The disturbing thing about him is that there are people who take him seriously.

I think the theme with this Glen Beck bashing isn't so much what can we blame on him. It's broader than that.

The theme is that the political decision to engage the radical right wingers as part of a strategy to strengthen conservative political power is dangerous. I don't know what kind of dangerous radical left people there may be in this day and age ( I don't know ecoterrorists, Animal Liberation Front?) but the democrats know better than to try to activate them.
