Fox Spins

A protest by hundreds of students led organizers to cancel a Tuesday night speech by American conservative commentator Ann Coulter at the University of Ottawa.

Fox likes to say the students were "threatening" Coulter.

A spokesman for the organizers said Coulter was advised against appearing after about 2,000 "threatening" students crowded the entrance to Marion Hall, posing a security threat.

"It would be physically dangerous for Ann Coulter to proceed with this event," said conservative political activist Ezra Levant inside the hall. "This is an embarrassing day for the University of Ottawa and their student body . . . who chose to silence her through threats and intimidation."

Conservative Activist Ezra Levant = bullshit spinning

Now, lets get the Actual, Un-Foxed version

In a brief statement Wednesday University of Ottawa President Allan Rock defended his institution and said that free expression is a core value of the school that bills itself as Canada's university.

"Freedom of expression is a core value that the University of Ottawa has always promoted. We have a long history of hosting contentious and controversial speakers on our campus. Last night was no exception, as people gathered here to listen to and debate Ann Coulter's opinions."

Rock's statement said organizers of the speech themselves decided at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday to cancel the event and informed the university's security services on site of their decision.

The statement said a crowd of about 1,000 people had "peacefully gathered at Marion Hall."

So, half as many students who were using their legal right to protest against hate-speech.

Ottawa police were also issuing statements about the Ann Coulter affair Wednesday

Ottawa police spokesperson Alain Boucher said the police did not shut down the event, but said a different venue was needed to hold the crowd of around 1,500 people.

"We strongly suggested that this venue was not large enough to accommodate all the people that had attended," he said. "We had safety concerns with the sheer number of people that were there...with different views on issues."

Coulter is playing the victim card. I won't quote her because allowing my cursor to touch her words makes me want to throw out my computer.

She's also the victim of a hate crime!

Firebrand US conservative Ann Coulter has accused a Canadian university provost of "hate crimes against conservatives" and called for a human rights probe of the matter, a local paper said Tuesday.

The American right-wing pundit and author is in Canada for a trio of speeches.

Ahead of a talk at the University of Ottawa on Tuesday evening, she said she was warned by provost Francois Houle to use "restraint, respect and consideration" when speaking at the school.

Coulter told the Ottawa Citizen newspaper: "Now that the provost has instructed me on the criminal speech laws he apparently believes I have a proclivity (to break), despite knowing nothing about my speech, I see that he is guilty of promoting hatred against an identifiable group: conservatives."

"The provost simply believes and is publicizing his belief that conservatives are more likely to commit hate crimes in their speeches. Not only does this promote hatred against conservatives, but it promotes violence against conservatives," she said.

Houle wrote to her to say that Canadian laws "delineate freedom of expression in a manner that is somewhat different than the approach taken in the United States. I therefore encourage you to educate yourself, if need be, as to what is acceptable in Canada and to do so before your planned visit here."

"Promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges," he continued.

Claiming to be the victim of a hate crime, Coulter told the Citizen she would ask for an investigation of Houle's letter.

Monday, before a packed audience of about 800 at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada, she attacked gay rights activists, the mainstream media and US President Barack Obama's administration.

She also told a Muslim student to "take a camel" as an alternative to flying.

Maybe it's for the best. She doesn't exactly have the best track record in Canada.

No, that's not it. It's just that when the facts disagree with Ann Coulter, it's the facts which must be wrong.

And then there was Calgary...

One young boy carried a homemade sign that read: "I don't have a camel or a flying carpet, can you lend me your broomstick?" a reference to controversial comments about Muslim people made earlier by Coulter.

There were a handful of hecklers, and Coulter ruffled a few feathers when she called Canada the "least diverse country" she has ever seen during a question-and-answer session.

"Look at this audience, there are a lot of white people here," she said.

She also explained her comment she made to the Muslim student about travelling by flying carpet, saying it was taken out of context and was an attempt at humour.

"That was a joke," she said. "You know how I know it was a joke? I know there are no flying carpets."

What a moron. Perhaps non-white people didn't go because they didn't want to be harassed by a half-wit.

Earlier Thursday, Lindsay Blackett, Alberta's minister of culture, likened Coulter to the female version of American radio shock jock Howard Stern.

"If most people didn't know who Ann Coulter was, the day that Ottawa U decided to have it cancelled, everybody knew who she was.

"Ann Coulter is the type of person who is here to look for maximum effect, maximum shock effect. She's a female version of Howard Stern, just say something outrageous and let people respond to it."

Blackett said people need to stop paying her attention.

"It's much ado about nothing, and the more we give her the attention that she craves, then the more that we feed her ego."

She really is very smart. Its just the rage and self-righteousness knobs have been turned up to eleven. I wonder if she has a therapist or teacher in her life, someone dedicated to helping people and the diversity of human experience, who has to look at her with a straight face and who can see the good person hiding in there? I wonder what thats like?

Right. And I really don't think she's smart. I think smart people usually get their facts straight before expounding and ranting on a topic.

It doesn't take much intellect to pander to ignorant crap-for-brains of Coulter's ilk. The brainwave is "hey, I can make money with this drivel?". Then it's overcoming personal shame. After that, it ain't exactly mentally taxing to be a right wing caricature.

And Howard Stern should be really insulted by the comparison.
