George Bush is the most powerful man in Britain according to a recent poll.

The most powerful man in Britain is U.S. President George W. Bush, while soccer star David Beckham's sway over British society is in freefall, a men's magazine said yesterday. Bush tied with Prime Minister Tony Blair for first place in the list drawn up by the British edition of GQ magazine.

Blair has long faced criticism that he simply follows Bush's orders as his "poodle," but GQ claimed that re-election has given Bush an even bigger say in British life. Last year, the U.S. president didn't make the top 100.

But is it a poll? The article says drawn up by the British edition of GQ magazine.. So it is just that magazine's opinion, surely?

Clearly 'GQ' still has its finger on the pulse as much as it ever did.

I think the important thing here is that Tony Blair will not be PM next time around because we aren't as fucking dumb as bush supporters.

You think? What are our other options? Doesn't seem like Tony is ready to pass the torch to Gordon Brown just yet. So that will leave him as the candidate for Labour. That then leaves us with the Michael Howard and the Tories. eeek

We'll no doubt get whoever the Sun newspaper give their backing to - something that is pretty frightening in itself.

What about the Lib Dems, the party that gained the most seats in the last election was the Liberal Democrats and I'd rather have Charles Kenedy any day than any other fucktard in British Politics.

You beat me to it. Not re-electing Blair pretty much means Howard becomes PM, or are you holding out for a UKIP upset, germ13?

What about them? smile Do you honestly think the Liberal Democrats stand a realistic chance of gaining power in the UK? Yes, it'd be nice. No, I can't see it happening. Maybe they could get more votes than the Tories but I doubt it.

The way I see it:
- former Tory voters who voted Labour in recent elections but are now disillusioned with Labour will revert to voting Tory.
- Labour voters know that it's still a choice between Labour and Tory. People who have lived under a Tory government in recent times (Maggie anyone?) know that it's not an option to vote Tory and will vote Labour again. Lesser of two evils.

We work in a three party system and I'm hoping the only worthwhile party currently in British politics wins.

Don't feel bad. As EU countries go, you guys don't have to deal with half the shit Hellenes are subjected to every week. I think my persistence in following their politics is proof-positive that I have a streak of masochism. wink

I recon we should give the monster raving loony party a go at running the country, they really cant do any worse than the present government, and being anarchists they wouldn’t suck up to bush they would just take the piss out of him

To your first point - yes they are. And the Tories aren't far behind them on those terms.
On a local level, yes, we work in a multi-party system. Especially with devolved governments and regional assemblies. Nationally, though, it's still a two-horse race.

It sounds like the list of candidates was drawn up by GQ and voted on by readers.

I've Google news-ed it, and no story says "voted" that I found; GQ did a power issue back in May, and nothing in that was voted, so I guess this is similar. I'm prety confident it's some journos with some factor such as column inches/press coverage; and the Guardian's story is in thier publishing section
