I guess the only fear I have regarding trying the people in Guantanamo will be the ability to gather evidence. It is a lot harder to find solid evidence in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan than it is in America, especially given the current state of chaos there. We are going to end up releasing a lot of people that probably should be imprisoned. But at least we will be able to free the truly innocent as well.

I'd say that's a legitimate fear, except that the detentions haven't lead to a single conviction yet. What I don't know is whether they've been a source of reliable intelligence information in tracking down terrorist cells that are still at large. But the geneva conventions don't prohibit interrogations, they just establish parameters that interrogators have to follow when they're conducting interrogations to set a baseline, minimal standard of what's considered to be acceptable conduct in the treatment of prisoners. So hopefully we'll still be able to take, hold, and interrogate prisoners in a way that provides useful information for intelligence services but doesn't compromise our international image the way some of these incidents have.

How do you get the interrogation job? I could get people to talk just so I would shut the fuck up.
So, what kind of ice cream do you like to eat? I like chocolate, but I am not so fond of fruit flavored ice cream. Can't stand sherbert. Do you like sherbert? Oh thats silly you live in the desert I bet you like any kind of ice cream. Does living in all that sand bother you? I hate sand. Going to beach, eating gritty hot dogs makes me want to just throw up. I dont really like hot dogs anyways, you know they are just lips and assholes right? Speaking of assholes, I saw my ex boyfriend at the grocery store and........
They would crack like fucking eggs.

We should team the fuck up, yo!

We could bring the WORLD TO ITS KNEES with our combined blathering power!

biggrin

P.S. And with our sweltering hotness, but, you know, that's kind of assumed. wink

Are you kidding? America's been almost continuously at war since the Revolution. The Quasi-War, the Barbary Wars, the War of 1812, some "actions" against Native Americans, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, some more "actions" against Native Americans, the Spanish-American War, and only then, the glorious American Century.

Hmn... I wasn't aware of many of those, thanks for pointing them out. So we're close to what, nearly 200 odd years of continual warfare?

nice going for a 'peace loving nation' isn't it?

I suppose, you guys love peace so much you're willing to start wars to defend it.

mom is the bread winner. dad is a work from home computer programmer/ far right wing blogger. the son is thinking of joining the military through his church group. (sort of a spread democracy AND jesus thing) he is secretly gay, but it would crush his parents. the daughter is a pretentious snooty liberal high schooler with tons of books, but no actual facts. shes looking at applying at stanford, harvard or NYU. sarah lawrence is her safety school. the exchange student is named akbar allah, and is a secret mole for al queda, sort of an army of one. he has a prayer mat in the garage. even though he is completly and transparently working for al queda, the family doesnt realize it, because he's one of the good muslims that they parade arouynd to show thier tolerance. and bring to church, to try and give him the right religion

up until the first world war..... the US was considered a "Conquering Nation" We used Mainfest Destiny to justtify tossing the Indians out on their Asses for our own personal gain. We used cannon fire to force trade with Japan in 1853, again, for personal gain.

Until the 20th century... we were the bullies of the playground.

successive administrations have used things like the monroe doctrine to keep the US in an almost constant state of, if not war, at least continual fear of 'the other'.

This has been used to excuse an aggesive foreign policy which has in turn fostered a world generally fearful of US policy which has fed back to the current 'war on terror'.

Current examples, the Pacific fleet (USS Bohomme Richard, etc) in war games in the pacific, close to both N Korea and China, as an unsubtle show of US force. The lack of any comment regarding Israel's assault on Palestine and the continual needling of Iran in a potentially nuclear situation (but as with the Cuban missle crisis, others (Europe back then, Israel now), would actually suffer 'fallout' first).

It's a debatable point, clearly, but if the US goverment were to stop intruding in foreign policy matters under the confused totems of 'manifest destiny' and being 'the worlds peace keepers', i think a lot of people would be a lot less inclined to blow shit up (including themselves).

The reason the Administration didn't want to give them Geneva rights was because they couldn't prove anything against them.

Yeah, they called them "enemy combatants" they said we aren't fighting a conventional "war". The main reason they were held was to make all of this look like they were actually doing something, the problem with that now is that the Bushies are going to start making up shit about all those people but that can and WILL backfire on them.

This is nothing but a perfect example of domestic terrorism, programing people's brain with all this fear about capturing terrorists in Miami, NY and elsewhere and saying we have them in a secure place so they won't hurt you. As long as the people have the need to feel safe and the administration tells them that is what they are doing, no one will say anything about it or against it.

And you personally know that every person held in Guantanamo is just some poor sap that got caught up in Bush's mastermind attempt to brainwash us all? It is working real well I guess, everyone being oh so fond of Bush right now.
I do not doubt for one second that some of the people detained are innocent, and it is a travesty of justice that they are being held there at all. I'm also not so soft hearted as to believe that they are all innocent as a sack full of kittens.

Were every American so level-headed, madam, we could have a genuine debate on how best to serve the interests of the American people.

Oh, well. People just can't be trusted to govern themselves, I suppose.

[I essentially agree with you. I seem to recall that part of the justification for the conditions in gitmo and the enemy combatant designation was to free us to interrogate the detainees. Do these people really have anything to tell us anymore? What is the harm in treating them as POWs? We can detain them indefinitely, more or less.

Yes we can hold them for a long time, but eventually they will have to be charged with something and once that happens it will destroy America's reputation even more then it has now, even if Bush isn't around anymore.
