My Dad got a 1st gen iPod, when the battery on it finally rolled down 4 years later to only a 5 hour charge, I spent $40 to get a replacement battery with triple the charge of the original. It took some prying but worked better than ever afterwards.

The "iPod's Dirty Secret" site is old, with outdated information on their replacement policies, and tries to convey the ridiculous notion that all iPod batteries just plain die when it's really quite anomalous. Although I suppose it does give a nice fuzzy feeling to all those folks who can't afford an iPod or think it's too trendy.

I plan on getting $50 out of the verdict, continuing to use my 3rd gen iPod with it's 4 hours as it's more than I get around to using most outings, and not upgrading until they add a function I care about.

rechargeable yes... but even rechargeable batteries will eventually stop taking a charge, and when that happens you can't replace the battery on an ipod.

iPod batteries can be replaced, and they are pretty easy to install.

Oh? and these batteries you can pick up at any Radio Shack?

What they need is an ipod that will take rechargeable AA, or AAA nihm batteries. Something fairly cheap, easy to find, and easy to replace.

Ah, another "I'm a much better industrial designer than the best people in the world." thread.

The iPod has a sealed shell to protect it. It is water, shock and dust resistant because its a freaking hard drive. You can, in fact, pick up a new battery very easily. Its a standard Sony battery. There is no reason whatsoever that you should have to be able to pick one up a the Kwik E Mart because its a three year battery. Even the bad batch worked just fine for a year and a half. You don't have to pop out and replace them on the spur of the moment.

All of the other "easier" things have been tried by all of Apple's competitors and guess what? They don't work, they just cost less money. If you want a product thats going to break to save a few bucks, knock yourself out. Me, I'll take my "bad" iPod which is still going strong after having been all over the world multiple times.

You're quite the self-righteous prick arent you?

*sigh* every forum has one...

I'm not trying to personally attack you and hope that isn't taken as the central point of this post, but I did feel it necessary to congratulate you on a minimalistic, yet truly breathtaking display of irony. Kudos good sir.

It makes me wonder how two guys who describe themselves as 'independent filmmakers' and, hence, people who probably have to scrounge with less than pristine filmmaking equipment, couldn't muster up the technical gumption to just open the stupid thing and see if they could fix it.

Or, to be honest, it doesn't make me wonder, it makes me think they were idiotic cranks with a blatant self-promotional streak.
