the fact that he gave medical attention to the sniper?

you mean in what way is it serpriseing, or in what way it is a marked diffrence of what has been going on out there?
if you mean the first,:
well if i'd been shot at the first thing on my mind whould not be to help the person who shot me, regardless if i wasa medic or whatever, he wanted to kill me therefore, idon't help him, thats just me,
if you ment the second:
haveing a friend out there who recently returned on leve for a week, and hereing some of his eye witness accounts of what troops have done, witch i won't go into here, makes this 'nice' act all the more serpriseing, to me at lest, as from what i've herd.
it is out of the norm
"also this is a physics question i guess but how come you hear the shot noticeably before the guy falls down, it's almost like he get's shot stands around, falls and get's back up instead of being knocked of his feet."
The round travels around 2000/3000 feet per second, so it does take a little while for the bullet to hit its target and to transfer its kinetic energy.
Also, another observation would be that I don't think a lot of us have much experience of how a human body reacts when hit with a bullet, so it might be a normal reaction that seems odd because one is used to hollywood or videogames, or simply has no experience with such things.
Here is some discussion from a military board I frequent that should enlighten you a little.

Lt Col Dave Grossman, author of "On Killing" has a theory that guys fall when they get hit because that's what happens on TV and in the movies. Just unconcious conditioning.

I am pretty sure having the wind knocked out of you with that many foot pounds of energy will put anyone down. With the reports of size of his bruise and the Backface deformation, I am pretty sure he felt like he was hit with a ton of bricks.

On top of what XXXXX noted about conditioning there are other factors as well; the mental shock of being hit could make someone fall. Or the fact that Pfc Tschiderer doesn't seem to be standing in a perfectly balanced position (looks like he's about to take a step back) when hit, thus making it easier for the bullet to knock him off balance.
XXXXX could probably confirm or refute this, but it looks as though the hit is high and to the right, thus "adding to the spin"?

Hmm, I thought ballistics experts say that there is no such thing as "knockdown power;" that most rounds are not able to physically knock someone down. Was it the impact that caused him to go down or was it a reaction to being hit?

When the term "knockdown power" is used, the general idea is that the energy pushes someone OFF thier feet (the proverbial flying backwards through the plate glass window movie money shot). In this video the Medic drops straight to the ground, knees first then down on his back. There was little if any momentum backwards. I'd bet he would have fallen the same way if the round hit him in the head shutting the lights off.

One of the few things that myself and Grossman agree upon.
We I was just a wannabe tactical pup in middle school, Dad would take me to watch State Police "shoot, don't shoot" exercises dealing with traffic stops.
Role players used .38 blanks and with out fail, alomost EVERY officer that let the role player get the drop on them eneded up on the ground after the shot. It was the whole cops and robbers, cowboys and indians thing that we did as kids.....
The officers would drop clipboards and flashlights and fall to the ground as though mortally wounded....Instructors were screaming at officers to draw (while laying on their asses) and return fire. You have the rest of your life to return fire.
One of my guys caught a 7.62X54 Russian in the spine of a rear BALCS plate. Although he remembers getting spun around, he did not actually realize that he ahd been hit until a week later when he pulled his back plate out and found the impact point.
great link and this thread was a good read. the "knockdown power" debate is also interesting, but i wonder why people with more combat experience can't say definitively if it's true. it could also be an instinctive thing, your mind telling your body to get down in case anything else is incoming. but the cops and robbers theory is interesting too.

It's not true, or not exactly. The bullet doesn't hit any harder than it leaves the gun. So unless it's a shotgun or a real heavy rifle the kick means little. There are other factors including hydrostatic shock, among others, which can cause you to shut down or "knock you off your feet" as it were.
From 75 yards..firing a shot center mass is good...but at that range..any good sniper I think would go for the head shot.
Thank god that sniper hit the medic in the body armor. That guy popped up fast and got to cover. Glad he had it on. The fact they catch the guy..and the medic gives him treatment..is really awesome. Hell of a medic.
Kudos too him though, He got straight back up, quick look indentify target, runs for cover calls in support. Thats trainning for you. Then when they get them he gives medical aid to the bastards.
I hope all terriosts are taking notes, The solders are there to help you with a new life. Governments dont always reresent the guy at the sharp end of the stick.
i didn't notice before with all the arabic going on but the two snipers are dutch muslims, near the ending one of them asks "did you hit him?" in dutch and the shooter confirms in dutch.
that's rather disturbing, like we don't find enough islamic terrorists in our country allready without them going of and shooting people in iraq.
the video/oberserver guy says "I have the target... hit him" the sniper says "God is great" numerous times while he cleans up the hide... the casing is heard coming down a good distance away. The observer says "Is he struck?" The sniper says "No he's not..."
really makes you appreciate the fact that the US Government decided to invest in the IBA (Interceptor Ballistic Armor) it sure as hell beats the old Flak Vest which was never intended to stop bullets. THe IBA is a heavy SOB and makes you sweat a lot more than you want or need to but i am glad to have one, and next to my M$ it will be my best friend when i go to the desert in december. It is really amazing that the reason that the military trains so much is to make that training muscle memory, so when something like this happens you don't even think you react, and you always react the way that you were trained.
