Okay, so apparently I'm still not articulating my point well enough. I'll give it another shot. Corruption happens: period. Those with government power and those with significant economic power are bound to make deals, it's as natural as the rising sun. It doesn't make it good or right or whatever, but it's reality.
When a type of corruption occurs wherein people who need help, get the help, I'm not going to be one to rise my voice against that.
I admit, I probably prematurely judged on whether or not this man was really a good guy...this situation is all I know about him. But this situation, in and of itself, doesn't make me think this guy is any worse than any other government official. And I would still shake his hand for taking part in this activity.
There is a reality exemplified by this situation, a reality I think far too many people are oblivious to or simply choose to disregard: A CIVILIZED UTOPIA IS IMPOSSIBLE. Greed is inevitable, selfishness is inevitable, abuse of power is inevitable. No law has ever brought an end to any unwanted behavior. So a government official is corrupt...big news. A government official helped children in need via his corruption...super! We take what we can get. Reality doesn't play fair.
All I know is, I'd be packing more than a .38 if I'm carrying around that kind of cash in my neighborhood, much less in Iraq. Of course, my neighborhood, like Iraq, sees a lot of sporadic gunfire, so...
