$15 million towards the disaster relief is fucking chump change for the US.

We better step it up or else we will indeed be stingy (i know the US has promised more).

Note: Florida hurricanes - The Federal Emergency Management Agency, which was swamped by 1.18 million applications for emergency aid and has approved payments of $3.17 billion to date. source

That's not an honest comparison. FEMA provides money not just for humanitarian purposes, but also in leiu of insurance money. i.e. it doesn't just pay to keep people from starving and dying from disease, it also pays to help Jane Doe rebuild her backyard pool.

I don't know that anyone is suggesting that the U.S. has to send people over to the Indian Ocean to start repairing pools and rebuilding luxurious resorts.

Update: Looks like Bush has promised an additional $ 100,000,000.

Good on him.

and that was purely form public donations,

Why do you continue to disavow the cost of what it takes to mobilize the elements of the US Military that have been sent to the theatre...?

Because if they don't it's that much harder to bitch about it. Apparently every nation in the world has naval ships that can produce fresh water, at the low low cost of nothing. And they also have C17's that unfortunately cost the US about $500,000 to make the trip to fly in supplies and people, but everyone else has them, again at the low low cost of nothing. And forget the US's private donations, which will probably be more than ever, as usual. It's the budget damn it. You know, that money that comes from the citizens of the US, not to be mistaken for the other money that comes from the citizens of the US.

but surely the citizens of other industrialized countries also make private donations, so i'm not sure the latter part of your argument is particularly relevant. or do you have statistics re: the greater amount of u.s. private donations? (an honest question, not snarkiness.)

It will always be relevant for the reason of how can you separate costs(tax payer money) whether it be that which is pledged, or spent in deeds done to assist. It all comes from the same place. My remark to donations was an attempt to not have those overlooked. A previous poster had remarked about the amount of private donations from another country. Glad to see it. But let's not forget where and how the US pledges come from. Basically, the same place. It's citizens. I find it hard to seperate the two. You posed an interesting question as to the greater amount of US private donations, and I too would be interested in seeing some stats on that for the current situation, and the past. Maybe someone has those?

Upon reports from surveillance teams on the ground and in the air...

Bush just upped it to 350,000,000 USD.

Also numerous private donations are still being coordinated, both from private citizens and corporations alike.

wink Additional Private Contributions

Nice to see the US wearing the " white hat ".

Hopefully this will serve as an incentive for other countries to pony up.
