We all know that no one in an office ever slacks off or wastes time. tongue

Seriously, there was a guy I used to work with who, somehow, could continue to click a mouse while he slept. This gave the illusion he was working (aided by the fact his cubicle was in a remote corner from the supervisor.)

Read the rest, I did say they were learned. I'm just saying a workforce that is used to lounging around when at home may have a bit more adjustment than normal before effectively working from home. That this adjustment period could be a stumbling block. Old habits, and all that.

And Shalome, you've just developed good home-work habits.

Honestly, the accent thing is a problem for me whether the call is sent to a foreign country or not.
Without fail, no matter what company I'm calling or where their reps come from, I end up with somebody with an accent.

I feel really bad about it being a problem, but I'm fucking hearing impaired and it's hard enough for me to understand people with my own west-coast-manner-of-speaking on the phone.

I've been frustrated to tears many a time because I couldn't fucking understand what was being said.

WHY do I feel GUILTY about saying that?

Augh.

Liberal guilt. Send a check to Sally Struthers and you'll feel better. wink

But, I see that no one will address my larger point, namely that the damned squirrel DID NOT have his computer plugged in!!!! Come on! Any takers???

It's a laptop. Laptops have batteries and are made to be used without being plugged in.

My laptop is not plugged in right now and I'm using it.

biggrin

Nice try! So why did the squirrle not say that to the poor tech support guy??? I think the real problem here is not the tech support in India, but that fucking squirrel, intentionally confusing him. smile

Yeah, and American accent is useful to an American, an Indian accent is useful to an Indian.

I think the point of the cartoon was that the customer had more knowledge about computers than the technical support. Computer won't boot. Software issue. Use a boot disk, replace boot files. The customer said he was screwing around with boot files. hmm.. Takes a few critical thinking steps to come to the conclusion the boot files were corrupted or deleted. A few more simple critical thinking steps and the problem is solved. The problem arises from the language barrier, and the tier system of technical support. You have to wait hours to get to tier 3 or 4 where someone who actually uses a brain and can troubleshoot the problem. Hopefully those people are still in the US because these india people can barely read from a list.

After numerous complaints from customers, companies like Dell have brought their tech support back to North America.

This is big business is Canada right now. Companies which provide tech support for American companies went through an amazing period of growth this year. We're cheaper than Americans, but have familiar accents and the same cultural background (i.e. TV shows).

that's great news. people who work at home are often happier because they can attend to their own life functions (like feeding themselves, raising children, or going to the doctor) much more easily. removing a daily commute helps clean the air and reduces stress, too. i hope this trend takes off.

"Hello, welcome to Dell service and support, how may I he- Billy, shut that kid the fuck up! I'm tryin' to do my job here. No you can't have a cookie. I'm sorry, could you hold on a minute?"

"Lilly, come over here and make that hold song noise again"

yeah...sounds like a real joy. confused

Call monitoring, quality control, and auditing can still be done, and is easier for the supervisor if they don't have to physically watch people in a call center.
