The election was held on 7 November. Gore conceded on 13 December. It felt sooo much longer.

Keep an eye on the boards. You'll know when it is over, no matter what the results.

It is never over on the boards.

I still say Dewey won.

this has nothing to do with the courts. this is a recount, which happens in almost every election, and does not involve the courts. if the result flipped the election, and bush sued, that's where you should direct your outrage.

i'm already resigned to the fact that kerry lost (though i would be pleasantly surprised if it went the other way), but it's still important for our elections to be 100% accurate. that benefits both sides.

This is why I just donated $5 to the people funding the recount.
Not because I expect it to make Kerry win.
(Although DAMN that would be nice).

well said.... and I just gave them $20

Word up, you're a better man than I.

All the sites are recount and voting sites.

I'm sure that the mistake was just computer-error, not some Conservative Rightist Conspiracy to take control of the government.

I mean, mistakes happen, and I'm personally glad to see the state of Ohio taking the steps to correct their mistakes without getting all pissy about it.

The CEO of the company making to voting machines with no verifiable paper trail, was also the finance chairman for Bush in Ohio, I'm definatly not sure.

Now I'm not saying that Ohio was stolen, I'm just saying the conflict of intrest there is pretty huge.

Well the fact that the number of votes 'overcounted' was random, and not some set pattern, makes me think it was a computer-error.

But I can see how it could look bad.

So far all I've seen is different groups calling for recounts and trying to raise funds, but so far, no actual counting has started. At least, according to what I've found...

Process:

(1) Finish counting.

(2) Certify the results. This is expected about 1 Dec.

(3) Some Presidential Candidate files for a recount and has the money to pay for it.

(4) Recount.

Ohio is still on (1). They have not finished the process of counting the provisional ballots.

In mid-August, Walden W. O'Dell, the chief executive of Diebold Inc., sat down at his computer to compose a letter inviting 100 wealthy and politically inclined friends to a Republican Party fund-raiser, to be held at his home in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. "I am committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year," wrote Mr. O'Dell, whose company is based in Canton, Ohio.

That is hardly unusual for Mr. O'Dell. A longtime Republican, he is a member of President Bush's "Rangers and Pioneers,'' an elite group of loyalists who have raised at least $100,000 each for the 2004 race.

But it is not the only way that Mr. O'Dell is involved in the election process. Through Diebold Election Systems, a subsidiary in McKinney, Tex., his company is among the country's biggest suppliers of paperless, touch-screen voting machines.

Judging from Federal Election Commission data, at least eight million people will cast their ballots using Diebold machines next November. That is 8 percent of the number of people who voted in 2000, and includes all voters in the states of Georgia and Maryland and those in various counties of California, Virginia, Texas, Indiana, Arizona and Kansas.

Some people find Mr. O'Dell's pairing of interests - as voting-machine magnate and devoted Republican fund-raiser - troubling.

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/09/business/yourmoney/09vote.html

Of course, some of us find it troubling that the Ohio the person in charge of overseeing the elections (and setting the rules, and changing them even after the voting was finished) is also co-chair of Bush-Cheney '04 in Ohio.

Some people sit in the theatre after the movie's over to watch the credits. But not many people sit in the theatre after the lights come up and start yelling at the screen about how the movie wasn't supposed to end that way, or demanding the projectionist show the rest of the movie.

So you are saying that the election is nothing but a trivial piece of entertainment? A distraction for the masses? Where if people think they have some input they are delusional?

Hmm you might have a point.

I just can't see that the recount is going to much matter. This is the most overtly fascist administration that we've had since Nixon's, it has no respect for the rule of law, and it will likely do anything to remain in power.

And before Stockula starts crying about my being a whiny liberal using hate speech to equate Bush with Hitler, let me say that I am neither a liberal nor a conservative, that Bush is not Hitler (he's not even Franco), and that by "fascist", I merely mean:

"A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism."

Bush may be a little loose on the socioeconomic controls (though, as an obvious oligopolist, he probably qualifies); and he's probably more crony capitalist and theocrat than racist; but he certainly strikes me as fascist.

And, Stockula, before you start howling even more, let me say, "Hey, I recognize that plenty of people love fascism. Not everything people with fascist leanings do is bad. I expect that, if one were to call it something else, most Americans would be happy with a fascist government. See, for example:

This makes me wonder what happened to the millions of dollars that the democrats collected in the last week of the election - the appeal was to give to a fund that would go toward any legal challenges of the actual balloting, or vote counts. Seems as though the sleazy fucks have folded it up and stashed it away for future lameness. mad

I want my $25 back.
