You tell ME what's so "patriotic" about what happened three years ago. There HAD to be better names for this day in the running. I'm not saying people shouldn't observe it briefly like they still do with Pearl Harbor since it was a sad event but... Patriot Day? This "Rah rah rah! USA!" air really pinches a nerve because a lot of it is senseless and schizophrenic like "Patriot Day". My goodness...

I don't think that naming 9/11 after John Ashcroft is very appropriate at all. frown

Yeah I love the "if you question the president's actions or speak out against him or anything else related to this country at all, you aren't patriotic and are nothing more than a traitor."

WTF? Since when is blindly following a single person or government regardless of its actions or mistakes being "patriotic"? And who says you have to be patriotic? What's the point in putting absolute undying loyalty to your country above all else in life no matter what? I have more important things to worry about than spreading pro-USA propaganda.

Ok enough about that. I simply think it's silly to name today "Patriot Day" as a way to rile up all the yokels who think anything with the word 'patriot' or 'america' in it is worth dying for.

yeah but all these "patriots" with their tshirts and flags are from out of town. i'm sorry, but with the RNC and now this i'm ready to tell every fucking tourist in the city to eat shit and go home. i am so sick of people using dead new yorkers as political props, and turning 9/11 into their own personal tragedy.

Why does it need to be named? The date itself is more than enough to remind people of what happened.

Also... Sept 11th = TV ruined. I was looking forward to relaxing in front of the TV today... but now I can't.

i think the whole thing is sickening, people suffer terrorism all over the world every day but only when some terrorists manage to get in a lucky hit on american soil they turn it into a practically international remembrance.
it almost sends a message as if american life is more valuable than a normal human life.

i'm a lot more shocked and saddened by things like the systematic rape of little girls by militias that's been going on for years since it's not economically interesting for anyone to interfere than by a one time disaster in america.
i bet no americans know by heart what date the the trainstation hit in spain was or even the recent events in russia but they made damn sure that the world remembers their terrible pain.

I'm not super fond of the other 9/11 thread either, but using the anniversary to make snarky remarks about freedom fries and complain about how depressing TV is is lame.

I'd say Rememberance Day would do much more to honor the memory of those murdered on 9/11. Not just Americans were victims after all.

Yeah, we do have a lot of Canadian channels, which when they play movies on TV, they're unedited in all their glory - and Canadian comedies tend to kick the hell out of any show thats come from the US in the last 5 years.
--

And for the record, I do find it to be a tragedy that so many people died because of September 11th, but i think it's more of a tragedy that people are still getting killed because of it, and that the things that the United States are supposed to stand for are being peeled away in September 11th's name.

I think it's that they're hoping that the populace of the US completely forgets about the American Revolution. Do you know what would happen if we tried to revolt against the robber barons in office now. We wouldn't even make the news, except to say that a rouge band of freedom-haters tried to kill President Cochese.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that was going to mention this? Liberty Cabage... wow. That will show them, hell we don't even need to go to war, we'll fart in their general direction...

JaiDee & the other NYers here understand what that day was like. I'm sure someone in the Pentagon is around, and believe it or not, someone's representing Shanksville, PA. Everyone else saw it on TV. I've told my 9/11 story - in short, I never want anyone to go through this again. That includes Russian children, Spanish commuters, British soldiers, etc etc etc. Yes, that day was terror. How many days like that have the Iraqis had so far?

I heard a disgusting ad for a 9/11 barbecue in rural Eastern PA - they didn't mean to be disgusting - just thought it was an appropriate commemoration. My husband & I turned to each other & said, "It WAS a barbecue!" This shit's not funny.

Also, I didn't know we were calling it Patriot's Day?! I can't wait for the Patriot's Day sales to start. Commemorate......now.

Maybe what he meant is that you guys are being hella lame ass in here. Convienient for you it came out as suggesting you get out of the country, or you might still have to deal with the criticism that this thread plain sucks.
