Heres a link to a similar story.

Many women do seem to be imprisoned when they shouldn't be.

Interesting articles. Women in the UK make up 3% of the total prison population. In the United States, roughly 5%. As the artilce above suggests, it is far easier to make changes for that relatively tiny population. It should be questioned why special inquiries are taking place with the goal to reduce the number of women in prison, placing them instead under house arrest, etc.. Kate Donegan, quoted in the second article states, "I think it is important that I am not seen to be questioning sentencing policy. What I am saying is that there should be viable alternatives to prison." Hmm. Is she referring to women alone, or men and women? From the tone of the article, it seems to be the former. This puzzles me greatly, for obvious reasons. I wonder whether the prison industry is as merciless and powerful in the UK as it is in the States. If so, any call for reducing inmate numbers will be met by an even louder cry for the development of new "specialized" prisons for women.

It appears that eight times as many black women are incarcerated in the United States as white, according to this essay. . This would suggest that racism in law enforcement cuts across the gender divide quite nicely. Here's to consistency!

SCARY STATS can be found here. South Dakota and West Viriginia are decidedly creepy states, it does appear.

EDITED to mention that Demetrius_Z' links do not address exactly the original intent of this thread, but make for good discussion points. If anyone would like to take it back on track, go for it.
