In response to the recent terrorist tragedy in Beslan, a top Russian General had this to say:

"As for launching pre-emptive strikes on terrorist bases, we will carry out all measures to liquidate terrorist bases in any region of the world," General Yuri Baluevsky, chief of Russia's general staff, said, according to Russian news agencies.

"However, this does not mean that we will launch nuclear strikes."

A further response from Moscow in response to the attack is the offering of a $10M bounty for information leading to the "nuetralization" of

Aslan Maskhadov and Shamil Basayev, two Chechen separatist leaders who are household names in Russia after a decade of conflict in the mainly Muslim southern province.

It is appearing that Russia is preparing a "Bush Style" response to terrorism via extra territoria, heavy-handed strikes against militants from all over. Hopefully they can manage to be more successful than in the past but if Chechnya itself is any indication of things to come I fear they will only breed further discontent.

This is to say that Russia must have some sort of response to the viscious attacks in Beslan but hopefully they will be respond with more foresight than previously exhibited.

"Bush Style" simply meaning pre-emptive strikes beyond their own borders. They have a horrific record of pre-emption--or response depending on your POV--in Chechnya so it's nothing new for them. But i would tend to think that the language coming from the Kremlin right now is new in the sense that they're saying they are willing to go anywhere in the world to stop terrorism.

The "We won't launch nukes" comment is fucking scary.

Look at all the other stuff they've said they won't do, and then gone and done.

Yeah, that kinda came out of left field ya know. the fact that they brought it up makes me think that that they actually considered it.

Do they have any working ICBMs left? I think they're all likely to shoot off somewhere and wind up hitting Prague instead, and Prague is

I think they should invade Iran. That would definitely cause all terrorism to stop.

The US should have used nukes at Tora Bora and along the border w/ Pakistan...

alas, such measures would not have been looked upon too kindly by anyone downwind of the fallout.
