I have had this one happen. With a girl I knew from high school. It was not a good situation. You did the right thing. The only time now I would handle it differently is if I no the police can't arrive in town or it is someone I feel a personal need to protect.
Definetly made the right choice. Hopefully the cops can nail this guy. A gas station attendent over in Vancouver tried to help a woman getting assaulted recentley and had the shit kicked out of him for his troubles.
Yes, you did the right thing for all the reasons mentioned above. As crappy as you felt, the odds are sadly very high that things would have most certainly been worse had you intervened.
