Bush used this phrase for the millionth time in his speech the other night:

Like generations before us, we have a calling from beyond the stars to stand for freedom. This is the everlasting dream of America and tonight, in this place, that dream is renewed. Now we go forward grateful for our freedom, faithful to our cause, and confident in the future of the greatest nation on earth.

God bless you, and may God continue to bless America.

I think Kerry may have made a similar reference as well. Is it just me or does this strike anyone else as just a tad presumptuous?

There are certainly lots of positive aspects to America, and the country has made its fair share of contributions to society - but still.

I can't think of the last time I heard another world leader make the same claim; how would one even go about measuring such a thing? I'm fine with the statement " I'm from the United States and there is no country where I would rather live". Proclaiming the country (and its 300 year year history) " The Greatest Nation on the Planet" makes me wince.

Fuck that! What's the greatest city on earth, none other than Nu Jack City. Greatest nation on earth... I'm no downplayer in the role of the United States in geopolitics since the end of WWII, but why doesn't he just wear a shirt that says "O'DOYLE RULES!".

'I can't think of the last time I heard another world leader make the same claim'

That's because they all know we are the best.

This is one of the reasons America is hated throughout the rest of the world, there seems to be an arogance in proclaiming yourslef the greatest nation on earth when the country has so many of its citizens killed by each other every day.

I have nothing against America and think that it has given the world many postives but to call it the greatest nation on earth is probably going a bit far.

I agree, it's pretty arrogant. But also, not really a big deal.

Which is why Vladimir Putin didn't say. . .oh, shit, my bad. . .
whatever

what's funny is that, if this comment was made by another world leader (except, possibly, a German) no one would say anything. Why? Cause apparently only U.S. politics is the world's business.
Who here knows which party controls Japan's upper house, therefore has the power to decide the next Prime Minister? Hmmmmm?
Face it--it is a sad fact, what happens in America has a deep effect on the rest of the world, in a way that no other nation has. A few delusions of grandeur are inevitable.
And everyone talking about it only makes it worse. It's like a kid acting bad at preschool. We only want attention.
Ignore us and we'll go away.

Sprinting is for pussies, synchronized diving and water polo are all that matters.
