This could rock. But I swear to God (note the CAPITAL g) that I am going to walk out of the theater and demand my money back the first time an Autobot calls a kid "little buddy" or something to that effect.
I HATE it when shows put the kid in for the cute factor. Hell I was spitting nails at the TV when Boxy showed up in the recent Battlestar Galactica remake. My friends thought it was one of the funniest things they'd seen in awhile.
And a Robotech movie wouldn't be too bad, as long as they dumped the whole "Proto-culture" thing which I thought was the weakest part of the first series.
The only thing that could really ruin this film is if it was featuring Generation 1 characters and character design but featured them similar to how Armada comes across. What I'm most unsure about is the writing, Marvel Productions did all the scripts for Generation 1 and the original animated film, I haven't read anything that has expressed that they have anything to do with this upcoming live action feature.
As for a live action film based on the Macross portion of Robotech... why even base it on Robotech, just use the original Japanese SDF Macross plot arc, it was a 100x better anyway. I'm sure Mari Ijima would be more than happy to release a new album of her Minmei songs.
The website for the new movie is live today and can be found here.
I also just read a Yahoo! News Story that sets the release date as July 4th 2007. There is some inaccuracy in the article though which is as follows:
Transformers: The Movie was the little-loved 1986 animated feature that gave Optimus Prime, Megatron, et al., their first crack at the silver screen.
I can't name anyone I know who has seen this movie who does not love it. Who can forget the soundtrack featuring "Dare"? What about the moving scene where Optimus Prime dies? that's one of only three cinematic moments that have made me cry. Prime Fucking died man.
My biggest worry is that it will be directed by Michael Bay. Maybe he'll try something different and put a freeway chase scene in this movie.
