hey...it's sad...but you ever been to a place teeming with stray dogs? Yeah...it can get a little dangerous. They're in the road...as cars swerve around them... Attacking you when you walk or run on the sidewalks.... Forming packs and humping in your roses and eating your goat and chickens.

i agree, people don't like roach, ant, pigeon, rat problems etc either so why tolerate a infestation of stray dogs, because of that silly idea that they're man's best friend?
people mess up natural balances no problem but somehow when they attempt to fix them there's always someone up in arms.

killing them for the image of your town is kind of a lousy reason though.

I don't kill anything, I have ant piles in my yard and spiders all over the side of my house biggrin

I am just as mad that people mess up the natural balance as I am about killing animals to fix it. thats why I said " How about spending money to fix the dogs so they don't breed instead off spending money to poison them."

We don't go around poisoning homeless people so why do it to dogs who have absolutley no choice about being homeless.

Not that I don't trust you, but could you maybe post a link of the credible news service where you found this?

Thanks.

Edited to add quote.

im like that to really, i don't even swat flies and to me the best part about a gargden is all the little bugs and critters living in it so i didn't meant to come off as bloodthirsty.
still dogpacks can be a major nuisance at the least and positively dangerous under some circumstances so just making them barren isn't the solution most of the time.
also considering that a dog can give birth to a sizeable number of pups and you can't possibly get them all it won't even help all that much and every new generation of stray dogs will be more feral, packs take care of that.

it's sad but i think the best way to deal with it is to just try to wipe out the majority once and then try to keep it under control once and for all rather than just trying to cope with packs running free inside of towns.

Im not trying to defend anyone here; killing is bad. I'm pretty sure that this has been done quietly in other countries too. In addition im sure that there has been succesful actions to prevent this; since it hasn't been in our news. Believe it or not similar cases of mysterious deaths of stray animals from poisoning in the past have caused a large outcry. I tried reading the article but the page was down so I cant comment on it yet.

i think we should start poisoning roving packs of humans who are of no use and wild. at least they can choose not to be useless. these animals are in the situation they are in because of humans, and then we turn around and punish and poison them for it.

we live in a world where, if you're a dog, the humans love you but still cut your balls off. surreal (paraphrased from Pahalniuk)

This wasn't something that was planned a week prior to the games. It's been a problem for awhile, and other ways of dealing with the issue have been examined - sterilization and adoption (granted, along with accusations of killing dogs as far back as October in preparation for the games).

Another article:

This petition is only reguritating what the government has already tried (i.e. greater penalties for people who desert their animals, training, sterilization, etc).

I don't see how having dead dogs laying around the city will make them look better there are definitly better ways of handling the situation

Killing these dogs is no big deal, so long as it's done with minimal suffering on their part. I mean, we kill cows all the time, and there's no moral difference between cows and dogs.

(Killing bums is not ok - bums are morally different from cows and dogs - basically bums have autonomy and thus rights to life whereas cows/dogs have no autonomy and thus no rights to life)

They may be innocent dogs, but they are wild. Would you tolerate wild dogs in your town?

Don't get me wrong, I don't condone just flat out killing them, but the problem is a little out of control.

Thank you so much. I'm tired of people who think the only animals that have the right to live are the ones that are cute. And like someone said, there are plenty instances of animals getting killed for no real reason in this country if you want something to complain about. Am I the only one bothered by people eating live Madagascar cockroaches on Fear Factor(like every day)?

That sounds very quaint, but you know what? I don't buy it. I'm sure that while there are plenty of perfectly nice strays wandering around Athens, some of them are bound to be mean, and possibly rabid.

Pretty funny that they used to have pounds but animal rights groups were essentially what shut them down.
