Exactly how much of the American population lives outside major urban centers?
If you have no other option then I don't see a problem. 12 miles is a long slog. I do 8 in about 25 minutes to get to work rain or shine.

Mass-Tranist does not exist in the state of New Jersey.

Being the most densely populated state in the nation...this is the best we can do for mass transit.

I covered this in another thread, but it's worth repeatig:

There are no high voltage lines in the doors of any hybrid car.

Think about it for a minute - doors open and close, so where, exactly, would a power line go into and out of?

The high voltage lines in the car are clearly marked and typically mounted low, near the rocker panels and inboard under the car, where no "jaws of life" type equipment is used.

Stiles is hitting on a good point. Look at it from a different perspective. You are in your hot new hybrid with your friend in the passenger seat. Your passenger things the door is not full closed and opens it… power cut to the engine, warning lights flashing, big rig truck running up on you at mach speed. I don’t think the design engineers put mission critical high voltage wires through the doors.

I am all for a good boycott but this seems really silly to me. How often do you folks buy gas, daily? I buy gas about once every two weeks. Odds are that the daily boycott (if for real) would fall on one of those days I would normally not buy gas.

Snopes has an entry on this. The meat of the article is here:

"A boycott of a couple of brands wouldn't result in lower overall prices: Prices at all the non-boycotted outlets would rise due to the temporarily limited supply and increased demand, making the original prices look cheap by comparison. The shunned outlets could then make a killing by offering gasoline at its "normal" (i.e., pre-boycott) price or by selling off their output to the non-boycotted companies, who will need the extra supply to meet demand. The only person who really gets hurt in this proposed scheme is the service station operator, who has almost no control over the price of gasoline."

snopes is missing the point. some boycotts are designed to harm companies, but some are also designed to get people talking about the issue at hand.

Assuming you could get EVERYONE not to buy gas for a whole day, people would just buy more the next day. One day is far to shoort to be anymore more than a blip on the oil companies radar.

I am a slave to oil. My livelyhood depends on oil. I am an enabler to the oil elite. I am frustrated. Oh and I really really hate insurance companies in America.

Edited to say: after thinking about the boycott, It is hard enough to get people to do the 'wave' at sporting events let alone a national boycott.
