And of course now you got dumbfucks in over 30 states trying to secede from the US. No surprise that Texas, Alaska, and a buncha Southern states are on said list (apparently Texas is already up to over 92K signatures, though it looks like quite a few are from out-of-state or don't have a state listed. Rick Perry seems cool to the secession movement as well).

No, he doesn't.

"Gov. [Rick] Perry believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it," his press secretary Catherine Frazier wrote in a statement.

::edit:: just realized you wrote "cool to" and not "cool with," otaku. Sorry about that.

Rick Perry opposes secession for three reasons: first, he's totally got another shot at the Oval Office; second, his state would collapse in an orgy of bankruptcy and violence without federal funding; third, there's a third reason but I can't remember what it is right now. But it's important.

Yep. He's gotta think about his mainstream appeal. Wouldn't want to do anything to tarnish that.

If I remember my speculative history properly, upon secession Texas would have to re-assume liability for a debt of $10,000,000 (adjusted for inflation) that was assumed by the U.S. when it annexed the Republic. Plus 160 years of interest.

In today's dollars, that would amount to about $2.7 Billion of principle, and another $24.5 Billion in interest.

Somehow, I don't think secession would be worth the money.

Dick Morris says aloud what everybody knows:
I think that there was a period of time when the Romney campaign was falling apart, people were not optimistic, nobody thought there was a chance of victory and I felt that it was my duty at that point to go out and say what I said.

No worries Shai. smile
(also,it'd be...interesting to see how a seceded state(s) would deal with converting to its own currency, passports, etc. Especially since the folks who want to secede don't seem too interested in hooking up with their counterparts in other states to form a new confederacy (or even something similar to the EU)).

Good luck getting any of the secessions to happen, of course...

92k is what, less than 1% of the population of Texas? This is not a meaningful number of people or any kind of a mainstream concern. One of my common complaints about the major media is that they report stories like this without appropriate context in an often- blatant effort to stir the pot and get more hits/readership/etc.

"Small fraction of butthurt, misinformed wingnuts sign meaningless online petition which will never, ever happen" just won't drive traffic, y'know?

And those numbers JUMPED a huge amount once the "Story" was first announced.

And its not even a story. Petitions to secede occur every election cycle, even the midterms. Now, they do occur in higher numbers during presidential elections, and while we don't have sufficient data, I think its safe to say those numbers also go up a lot when a black man is elected president.

Yeah, Romney is a real shit. Apparently Obama only won because he gave "gifts" to blacks, Latinos and young people.

Seriously, the way he couched democracy into such a quaint summation as "gifts" goes to show just how out of touch and cynical Romney really is. He may be used to using gifts to bribe people into liking him, but democracy isn't exactly a currency of trade.
