education can exist without the federal government being involved, or with a different level of involvement than there is currently.

Edison Schools is a for profit public school corporation. When their stock tanked they hocked the computer labs and music equipment from a Philadelphia branch.

Nearly every state is in as bad, if not worse, economic condition as the federal gov't. Do you think they're going to want to take on added responsibility?

It'd certainly cut down on costs. In states like Texas, students would only need one book for all 12 years of schooling.

I've got NO IDEA what options you're talking about.
-- switching public funding obligations from the Feds to the states? What are assumed to the public finance advantages of doing that? (Or are there supposed to be pedagogical reasons for doing this?)
-- switching the funding burden from government to private individuals/families?
