...while pretending he still has a chance in the White House.

Rep. Ron Paul, one of the best-known U.S. House members, also one of the nation's most famous libertarians, let it be known Tuesday he won't run for re-election to focus on what is largely considered by many to be a quixotic run for the White House.

I like that word, quixotic.

Out of all the crazy social conservatives and extremist politicians all but turning their position into the political wing of their religion, Ron Paul was like an oasis in the middle of a lava field.

Meh, I dunno. He was against abortion rights which makes me think his libertarianism only went as far as things he personally agreed with.

He had his shortfalls as he did tend to tow the social conservative lines on certain issues(like abortion) but overall compared to all the other conservatives, I never really feared he would do something that would irrevocably fuck up our nation(mostly because he was ineffectual when trying to push his more wacky ideas).

Nah. Michelle Bachmann (sp?) has stepped up to the plate and given us plenty of ammo for the next two years.

This. His libertarianism is just an excuse for "I'm a conservative, but using the wrong word!" His support of "separation of church and state" is in the "Keep gov out of religion!" vein. Also, he believes that the Civil Rights Act was unconstitutional.

Not just her. Throw all the GOP candidates together in an arena and it looks like a circus sideshow.

Just out of pure curiosity, and not to be snarky in the least . . .

Who should run for the GOP candidacy?

AKA Jack Bauer. If I had to choose between West and Bachmann, I'd apply for Canadian citizenship.
