Ok, here's my last comment on this (*waits for everyone to cheer*).
At about 1:52, Palin says "No wonder girls have such low self-esteem in America". I then stated that might have case at some point, but not currently, citing the numerous applications to this site (typo not withstanding), and the "Sexting" phenomenon. I'm not sure what everyone whose currently disagreeing with me believes, because Palin's suggestion, and my disagreement are binary (either, generally Girls in America have low self-esteem, or generally they don't). I don't see how it's logically possible to disagree with both me and Palin, when our opposing position on the issue are the only two possible (unless %50 of girls have low self esteem, and %50 of girls do, a rather improbable statistic at the very least).
Dear God.
OK then.
Here's the deal, Sarge.
First -- The claim we're discussing is not a binary issue (whether or not Girls in America have low self-esteem or not). Only you think that.
Second -- It is not an accurate indicator of female self-esteem in general to simply ask "How many girls are posing nude/applying to nude websites/sending naked pictures of themselves to random boys?" The fact that girls are getting naked for photographs is not a reliable indicator of social trends in self-esteem. Even some of the most highly regarded models on this site confess to having their own self-esteem and body image issues. More generally, it could be argued that phenomena like "sexting" and "girls gone wild" are products of low, rather than high, self-esteem. I don't want to push that argument too hard, as I think it has some problems, but it serves to make clear that your reverse position is entirely without foundation.
Third -- It's entirely possible to disagree with both Palin and with you. Palin is making a causal argument, which is that there is some kind of "crisis" of teen self-esteem, and a lot of the blame for that falls on bad-taste jokes by "so-called comedians". I think that's a shallow and self-serving argument. We are disagreeing with you because you keep making stupid and ignorant assertions about whether self-esteem on average has risen or not, which is not what we're disagreeing with Palin about at all. We're disagreeing with you because you seem caught up in this obviously misguided notion that "self-esteem" can be measured by one-dimensional indicators like propensity to get naked.
It's all moot, now. Dave apologized formally on tonight's show. Hopefully, there'll be clips to post soon. i don't think he needed to, but it he was classy and sincere about it.
oh my god, does she really make, at 00:35, the cool surfer's shaka sign, while saying she respects flight attendants?
lamest way of TRYING to be cool!!!!!!!
Conan last Fall, "Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter's penalty box."
I hope this enough to prove that she is not a viable gubernatorial candidate for the next presidential election. Really? You're going to get in a pissing match with a late night comedy host? Really? What's going to happen when a head of a foreign state makes a comment she doesn't like? Start a war?
ALSO: I love her weak ass implication that Letterman is somehow a child molester.
6) "According to expense reports, Sarah Palin charged the state of Alaska over $21,000 for her children to travel with her on official business. In fairness to Gov. Palin, when she leaves them home alone they get pregnant." --Seth Meyers (SNL). Sarah Palin was in a sketch with Meyers a week earlier.
5) On October 8, 2008, Sarah Palin walked out on the ice with six year old Piper and 13 year old Willow, before the game, Conan O'Brien said, "Saturday night, Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers' hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter's penalty box."
Oh, yes he did. You get the outrage...but not a peep then. According to the new "logic", O'Brien was advocating for some really sick stuff.
4) Rush Limbaugh: "Everyone knows the Clintons have a cat. Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is a White House dog?" Limbaugh put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton. At the time, Chelsea Clinton was 13 years old. Rush also said, "In last year's campaign, the most prominent, articulate voice for standard run-of-the-mill good old-fashioned American conservatism was Sarah Palin." Calling a young teenager a "dog" can't be helpful to her "self-esteem." Where is the apology from the leader of the GOP?
Putting the reality of self-esteem issues in today's girls aside, this really highlights the self-serving timing of Palin's remarks.
