What state are you in? I haven't heard about it in Jalisco yet. I hope you're allright! Good luck!
Other side of the country but there were some cases recently over there as well. Well, last week, anyway. My test was negative so no 'Chronicles of the Infected' from me.
BOOOORRRRINNNNNG!!!
C'mon! Do your part for CE and get it! We wanna know what it's like!
*sigh* God, I hope this doesn't become a story again. I'd seriously suffer the swine flu if the universe promised I'd never have to hear about it again.

it is already the #1 topic on twitter but it isn't the main headline on cnn. so, who knows.

Yep. If only glib jerks could catch deadly diseases so that the rest of us wouldn't need to.
If you'd been paying any attention to this, instead of semi-digesting factoids, you would know that H1N1 was already slated to be around for at least another season, if not two or three. Flu seasons, that is. So it will likely kill quite a few more people in the southern hemisphere, and then this coming autumn and on into the following spring we will probably be dealing with it again in the northern hemisphere.
But, hey, you're tired of hearing about it, so I'll leave it at that.
Swine flu deaths in Britain double as health experts warn of epidemic in London 'within days.'
.
Yep, they've doubled...
to 14.
Whoa whoa whoa whoa! Don't let some context slip through into a good panic story.
Right. Oh, by the way, the flu is supposed to drop to barely existent numbers during the summer. The fact that it is increasing was considered to be the #1 bad sign of things to come.
But, yeah, people dying and cases increasing is no big deal.

In America there can only ever be two choices for anything. This apparently includes response to flu outbreaks. We can only "panic" or "ignore" it.
I really prefer to just keep an eye on it. It continues to be depressing to me that many overreacted to this flu (especially the stupid mainstream media) but it is equally puzzling how so many are just yawning their way through it as if it has no importance at all. The fact is that there are lots of complicated ways H1N1 could get much, much worse all over the planet.
It's odd to see some who are so vigilant in other threads about racism appearing to blithely ignore the southern hemisphere in this thread.

Geneva - The World Health Organisation said on Friday that the H1N1 flu pandemic is moving around the globe at an "unprecedented" speed as it stopped giving figures on numbers affected.
The influenza pandemic had "spread internationally with unprecedented speed", according to the global health watchdog.
"In past pandemics, influenza viruses have needed more than six months to spread as widely as the new H1N1 virus has spread in less than six weeks," the WHO said.
My sister came down with it and was fine after feeling really very shit for a week. She's in a risk group (kidney disease) and was officially tested & monitored but was fine.
Someone in my office is reputed to have it but is over the worst of it after 5 days. She's also apparently immunocompromised.
It's the flu. Deal with it. Yes, 29 official deaths have been reported in the UK but for fuck's sake, more people die in bus accidents than that. I think more people probably die from tripping over the kerb than that. (no I haven't looked up stats on that, I'm pulling it out of the air).

The concern isn't over how many people it's killing right now. The concern is, given the rate at which this strain has spread, and the fact that influenza has an amazing capability for rapid and unexpected change, that it can start killing a lot of people at any time.
I did 2 years of a Microbiology degree and I'm well accquainted with recombinant viruses, etc, and how dynamic the flu genome is. However, there's nothing we can do about that. No vaccine could cover it, no preventative measures will stop it. (and for fuck's sake people, antibacterial hand gel won't kill a virus)
Normal, seasonal flu is pandemic. So is swine flu. And?
I'm just fed up of the constant panic everywhere about it. I'm also fucking sick of everyone who says they have swine flu when they've got a cold. I loathe people who say "I've got the flu" when they have a cold.

Right, except making people knowledgeable. Which is what this process is.
man, i love this sort of thread, where some people say X and others respond with Y, but X and Y are completely unrelated. and they just keep saying X and Y at each other over and over again.
X: swine flu has a low mortality rate among healthy (and even fairly unhealthy) individuals with access to first-world health care. you, where "you" is defined as "anyone who can afford four bucks a month for naked laydeez", shouldn't be panicking about swine flu. you probably won't catch it, and even if you do, you probably won't die.
Y: most of the world isn't healthy, compared to you (as previously defined), and also lacks access to first-world health care. that, combined with swine flu's high communicability and the fact that the southern hemisphere is at the height of its flu season, means that despite swine flu's relatively low per-instance mortality rate, the total number of swine flu deaths in developing countries may skyrocket. while you may not die, plenty of other people are at risk.

One, most hand gels, at least here in the US, aren't antibacterial in the sense that they contain antibiotics. They're alcohol based, and alcohol does kill viruses.
Two, no one here is panicking or advocating panic. From the beginning, this threat has been split between those who think there's nothing to worry about at all, and those who think there's a genuine need for concern and advocate careful observation.
