I saw a flyer at work for this locally, and thought it was something "legitimate" due to the buzzwords in it . That was before I read this on Media Matters.

I realize there is a clip in the Glen Beck thread but think it needs a thread of its own.

Are they completely unaware that the Boston Tea Party wasn't a protest against taxes in and of themselves? I mean, they're within their rights to dissent and all, but they can't expect me to tolerate their inaccurate historical comparison.

I really want to see a video of someone asking their opinions on statehood for DC during these "tea parties".

Rachel Maddow demonstrates the proper amount of respect for these protests:

Maybe they want to be part of a disorganized society?

Wow, I can't believe what a nerve I've hit here. You know, Conservatives protests against goverment fiscal irresponsibility are just as legimate as a Liberal protest against the Iraq War.

I'm sorry man but the government has not been fiscally responsible for the past 30 years. There is no way you can blame the current administration without also blaming Bush jr, Clinton, Bush Sr, and Reagan.

Fair taxes is a reason to protest?

I'd say that fiscal irresponsibility would be spending the surplus money that the president before you had saved up. So, which conservatives were protesting during Bush's term of fiscal irresponsibility?

I'm sorry. Okay. It's obvious that Rachel Maddow gets it, as evidenced by her and her crew's (understandable) inability to stop laughing and smiling during that whole video.

But... do all these other people get it? Do they know what they're saying? I honestly can't tell if it's tongue-in-cheek, or if this is another "skeet-skeet-skeet" fiasco all over again.

No. they don't.

If they did, do you think they would honestly start a protest like this?

Exactly when were Conservatives protesting en masse when Bush Jr was being fiscally irresponsible?

Erm, no nerve hit, I'm just wondering how exactly Conservatives sending tea bags to Congresspeople because they don't like legislation that's being enacted by lawfully elected representatives compares to the Boston Tea Party protests of the Tea Act and other taxes levied on them by a government they did not elect and were not allowed to take part in.

Basically, I think it's a ridiculous method of "protest" -- and the fact that it's pretty much sponsored by Fox News and was actually the 2006 creation of a wing of the Libertarian party that thought the regular Libertarians weren't libertarian enough makes it even more hilarious that "Conservatives" are claiming it as their own -- that displays a pretty clear lack of knowledge of this nation's history.

Then again, I think most gimmicky protests are pretty stupid (for instance, I railed against the "let's block traffic to protest the war" protests too), no matter what part of the political spectrum they fall on.

And hey, don't mind me, I'm just speaking out against stupid gimmicky protests as someone who had to go through a line of protesters more than once to get to my DoD job on an Air Force base in 2002 and 2003.
