I live near a mega WalMart and sometimes shop there only if no other options are available. There's Sam's Club accross the street where I prefer to shop.

Until someone opens an razor, toothpaste, and deodorant co-op, I''ll probably have to shop there from time to time. Otherwise, most of their stuff is crap and their prices aren't the cheapest. It only goes for toiletries and consumer items, and if I computer hardware, stereo equipment, or music, I'll either order online or go to Circuit City.

It was stated in a earlier post that Wal Mart is too cheap, and that is actually bad for the economy since it doesn't put enough sales taxes into the local economy. Also, the "economy of scale" they take advantage of may be their undoing. They will, at some point, have to raise their prices since not every store generates a profit. Also, if they are leveraging their profit margins to open new stores, they might reach a point where they have to pay off the loans to build them.

I learned in marketing class that Wal Mart has wholesalers that now exist entirely to supply them. The wholesalers are locked into a contract that forbids them to sell to competitors. If WalMart's profits start sagging, they may demand wholesalers to lower their prices, then what do you think will happen to the wholesalers? Sue to break out of the contract to liberate them so they may sell to other storees like Costco? Some suppliers might have to sue?

I'm no economist, but I don't think WalMart is the unstoppable behemoth everyone, including themsleves, thinks they are.

More people are buying computers, especially lower middle class people who will catch on to the deals that can be found on the web. That may serve a blow to Wal Mart as well.

Oh the irony of it all. You prefer to shop at the warehouse store owned by walmart rather than go to walmart?

Edited 'cos I'm still too tired to remember where I parked that bus.

I don't refuse to shop there....I just don't find myself in there all that often. The closest one is a 30 minute drive. If I need some inexpensive housewares there's a K-mart close by. If I need food items, Shop-Rite is cheaper. If I need electronics, Best Buy has better quality stuff.

I have shopped there in the past, but it's been years since I've set foot in one and I hope never to again.

you guys have just convinced me to never, ever shop at wal-mart again.

eh, not really, but y'all took such a good stance on the subject, that now i'm thinking about it... however, being a rabid consumer living in a capitalist society, it's only a matter of time before there isn't anywhere else to shop at except wal-mart.

how is it that i live in a country with all this revolutionary thought, but with no real revolution? is it enough of an action to just boycott it? if everyone feels so strongly about it, why aren't wal-marts or targets or costcos closing down the nation over?

I find it ironic that many refer to sweat shops when talking about wal-mart, but last I knew target, sears, k-mart, and many other retailers have the same brands of merchandise ( even some of the local shops carry the same brands ). So I guess no matter where we shop we are all promoteing sweatshops? I for one have no issues shopping at the local wal-mart. It is claen, it is well stocked, the employees are always friendly it isnt usually crowded ( but I work nights so I am usually in there around 4 am) from what I know they pay better than the average wage in my area ( I dont know about benefits though ) not to mention it is 5 minutes from where I live.

oh and I will also point out in the area that I live the local shops/retailers before wal-mart arrived always looked ran down decrepit and what not due to the lack of the owners wishing to put any money into their bussiness so I have no problems that wal-mart may have been partially responsible for driveing them away and getting those eyesores demolished.

I have a long list of complaints with Wal-Mart aka the Devil's Workshop. This year Wal-Mart will gross close to 1 trillion dollars. Yet the biggest corporation in the world hires people part time in order to not have to pay benefits . That is just sleazy. They use sweatshop labor in poor third world countries where they can pay the .85 per hour. The product there is sub par. There is also the censorship issue. Sure they have the right to censor the material that they sell, but their reasons seem to be in the interest of influenceing peoples thoughts and ideals. The devil and major labor violator, economic destroyer and all around group of assholes has no fucking right to senor records to censor records. I am pro-labor and a socialist, this is just the short list that I have against Wal-Mart and along the same lines Home Depot. Fuck them all.
