I don't think that's a Southern quality, though, so much as it's a rural thing. I mean, go to the sticks of West Virginia, Montana, Eastern Oregon even.

I can't speak for the other places, but Montanan crazies tend to more just irrationally hate the government--regardless of race, creed, or color of said government people. Possibly because there are about ten black people in the whole state.

I don't think you were here when this happened. Enjoy some hillbilly humor and a picture of me wearing a jean jacket with "strangs." tongue

Not been there, have you?

Sadly, I'm there now.

And do tell, where that has neither Negros nor bigots? The latter are not required for the former, you know. Incidentally, the majority of black people live in the north.

I don't buy that. Citation?

And there are no "negros" where I am. There are a few people of color, however, though not many at all compared to the diversity to which I am accustomed.

What am I the world atlas? Make friends with google, or source your own bald categorical statments.

If you'd care to think about it, I'll propose some food for thought. Which are the most densely populated states? Where are the biggest and oldest cities? Where did black people migrate to by the millions after the civil war?

Just to start you off, there are more black people in NYC than there are people period in Kentucky, South Carolina, Arkansas or Mississippi.

Incidentally should you bestir yourself, we can talk about the census bureaus' curious definition of where the south is, but in the meantime, I'd still like to know where exactly you clam that there are no black people or bigots, since apparently either New York isn't in the North or 10% of all black people in America is "hardly fucking any" in your analysis. To say nothing of Chicago, Detroit, or Philly,

Oh my God. You look like the lost cast member of "Facts of Life". No offense, but you have SOOOOOO gotten better with age, sweety.

Let me just say that the boldness you have shown by posting this picture makes me wish I could add you as a friend AGAIN.

i definitely have a soft spot for the south. i was born in georgia, lived in alabama, tennessee, and all my extended family lives in mississippi. my undergrad education was completely paid for thanks to the lottery and a forward thinking governor. i knew most people in my apartment complex. sure there are redneck assholes, bit at least they're not shortening the school year and closing down schools like they are here in oregon. i live here in portland now because it's beautiful, interesting, politically charged, lots of things, but if i had kids, i definitely be moving back to georgia.

and just comment in their journal-they may comment back, but there isn't a way to directly talk to them unless they have some sort of instant messenger.

for what it's worth, you can get a pretty good idea on this map of hate groups in the u.s. of the distribution of organized racism in the u.s., which is a fairly accurate indicator of state-by-state racist thought/speech in general.

Actually, the SPLC under reports, if anything. If there isn't a police report or the group doesn't have a website or a newsletter, it falls off their radar. According to them there are no racist skinheads in the GNYC area, which is pretty preposterous. It is interesting to note that their distibution does pretty well mirror the population distribution of the US, though

Has anyone here seen the movie "Gummo"?

Gummo was a pretty transparent rendition of my experience of the South, from my travels so far, evne though it takes place in Ohio. I would prefer to live in between a large city and the country, to have easy access to nature and to diverse culture and city events. Either which way, country music is fucked, so I prefer to stay away from anywhere it is popular, north or south.

And just to add my $.02:

I'm from the south, born here, raised here, and spent most of my life here.

The only things I actively dislike about the south are: Humidity and the Current Lack Of Things To Do Where I Live.

Now, I've been to plenty of places in the south where there's lots to do, and I've been plenty of places elsewhere that were boring as fuck. So the second one isn't a quality of the south, just of my place of residence. Now the humidity I probably wouldn't mind except during the summer...dear god does it get nasty.

As far as everything else goes, I love the clean air, the ability to stargaze, the presence of trees and grass almost everywhere, and similar things. I've met more polite people than assholes here, even if the assholes stick out more.

Yes, there are hillbillies, yes there are rednecks...but there are also stupid and ignorant people elsewhere. All in all, I like the south...I just don't want to live here in the summer biggrin

Oh yeah, lighten up folks...almost everyone has a bitch about some part of the world or another. Now I'm off to drink some Sweet Tea, fry some bologna and have biscuits and gravy and grits. I don't consider sugar on grits to be a crime though...it's really good with butter too *nods* smile

Say what you want if your white! I'm a little brown skin. I remember going on a honeymoon (1st wife) to canada, BC. And everybody there was white with brown hair, period.

they didn't seem to make me feel unwelcome but i was very selfconcious of the fact that i stood out. I wasn't as secure with myself as i am these days. Now i've been to wisconcin with my wife Anne and same sense of standing out but since i'm older I care less about what others think.

But the south? I might be different if I felt threatened. Just my opinion, I'd visit a bigger city and stay away from the rural south IF i visited.

It may be a bad rap but it their reputation.
