The Apple apologists come out in droves whenever anyone dares to tarnish the image of their beloved coporate entity
As any proponent of any product they like or dislike. I mean, come on, there are people who worship MS, IBM, Old Navy, Nike, Sony, etc. and if you were to challenge any of them, I'm sure they'd have the same reaction.
There's probably some particular product you hold in esteem and would banter over someone else's negative criticism.
Unless, of course, you're a nihilist. If so, then I salute you. You bastard.

No, Apple people are cultists. My family is Apple, and sometimes I wish they were Mormon instead.

Oh come on. Just because they're just plain better than everyone else doesn't mean they're cultists.

If secret handshakes and morally questionable ceremonies potentionally containing animal sacrifce make us a cult, then so be it

Ummm, yeah that it exactly, it realy doesn't have anything to do with the fact that the movie, while funny just isn't true.
For what they spent in paint and stencils and exacto knives and posterboard and DV tape, they could have bought a new battery and they needed a new battery so soon, not because thats how long they last, but because they used it really heavily
"The IPod battery indicator shows, approximately, how much charge is left in the battery," Apple explains. The company's note discusses situations in which the indicator will show there is charge left in the unit, when in fact it is out of power.
Apple also explains: "The IPod battery indicator may show less than a full charge after fully charging the IPod for four hours. This does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with your IPod's battery."
i'm hardly shocked, considering that every rechargeable electronic device i've ever owned has this problem.
You can read about oggs all you want from all sorts of OSDN sites, but here's the basic low-down.
Companies who use mp3-decoding / encoding in their products currently have to pay royalties to the creators of mp3. Fraunhoffer is going to pull a stupid LZW-style (compression in GIF) lawsuit someday. I have a bad feeling about it.
mp3s aren't backwards-compatible. Sound quality will suck forever and ever (I always hated the compression of any mp3 - oggs sound better to my ears). ogg-vorbis files will stay compatible until they change the ogg container format, which kinda won't happen now.
Oggs are actually better than mp3s for streaming media applications since the server can strip oggs of data on-the-fly, unlike mp3s, where you must pretty much decode / re-encode.
mp3s are a buzzword. People get sucked into trends and cry when something goes wrong when they really had the choice all along. This is what I'm worried about really - Apple, Microsoft, Fraunhoffer, or whoever else want their format to be dominant so they can cash in at everyone else's expense.
One last reminder: ogg isn't an audio format. It's a container format for all sorts of files like video, lossless compression of audio, image, etc. People just say oggs because it's catchier than "vorbis."
eh, i seriously doubt anyone will be listening to lossy compressed audio in 20 years from now. this almost reminds me of the vhs vs betamax debate. betamax was technically better, but dvd renders them both obsolete. and much like vhs, mp3 offers the superior consumer experience. mp3s are here to stay, for now.
I really like ogg and fully support anything that's open source simply because it means that I don't hafta pirate it.
However, if they ever want this thing to catch on they really need to do something about that name. Ogg just simply is not a catchy name. Personally, I like Charlene. "I've got my Ipod packed with 4,000 Charlenes and I am ready to go!!"
i have to agree 100% mainly because ipod is apple and as we all know apple is garbage. there is nothing like buying a $1000+ compy and have it be worthless the next year and cant find any one who makes osx programs, quicktime sucks also, i dont like apple

So your entire argument consists of a highly opinionated sweeping generalization that doesn't even begin to focus on the actual issue under discussion. Congratulations; you're an ass.

I would guess that one reason they haven't is because an alternative exists.

Good god.
Reverting to the alternative would be a nightmare. Don't get me wrong, I love .png, and personally try to use it for everything, but it's still only supported by certain browsers, image viewers etc.
Everyone would love it if ANY computer company made a computer product that did not depreciate an hour after you bought it but thats how it is folks. Moore's law dictates that for at least another 15 years computers are going to continue to advance in sophistication, so you might as well wait till then to buy any piece of technology. As far as the iPod battery goes; I have owned a 5gig model since the month they came out. I usually just leave it connected to my media storage box ( 333 mhz beige g3) and I cant say that I have had any major problems with the battery. The price is not horribly cheap but it is just a chintzy gadget, lets not get all hornswoggled and flim-flamed around about it. To the guy who claimed he couldnt find appz for OS X: are you nuts? There is a TON of programs for OS X! And dont kid yrself , OS X is a very innovative OS. Can you say UNIX? p.s. I dont have the Apple logo tatooed on me anywhere nor do I have any $ tied up in stock of thiers.
I am not a big fan of Apple but do not hate them. I HATE quicktime because it doesnt work well on my computer (its a Dell).
As for the iPod I wanted one and was hoping they would market them for PC's but after hearing that they dont have a replacable battery I decided against it.
Commom sense says give people the ability to replace the batteries in their $400 investment. No matter how long they last you should still be able to replace them yourself easily.

"I talk to the trees..."
Once more, with feeling. You can replace the battery. Its a standard Sony LiON. It takes five minutes and a small screwdriver. It costs ~$50. That is all.
Yes - if you don't have quicktime and are still desperate to have an opinion on this subject then you will read the short note from the makers of them movie that explains how the circumstances have changed since the beginning of the problem. Apple now offers replacement batteries, third party replacements are available and do it yourself now, but when the movie makers tried to get one it was not guaranteed and ended up wrecking their Ipod and making them buy a new one anyway. Apple also offeres an extended warranty now (which would of course be voided should anyone put in a 3rd party batt.) Now - commence with the spewing of vitriol - the voice of reason is leaving!
