But seriously, I'm glad they take even clearly retarded threats like this seriously. Obama makes a point of having large public open air events, and someone doesn't have to be brilliant to be dangerous.

Kinda. I don't ever intend to blow this up into something it's not. It's not like the Klan are massing.

But it's still (ever so slightly) sinister. I'm glad they were caught. (Which is to say, I'm glad they were stupid.)

So here's what I'm guessing happened.

An 18 year old and a 20 year old in extremely rural Tennessee (and I have family in one of the towns mentioned.. the entire COUNTY population is like 10,000 people) shaved their heads, did a bunch of meth, gave each other swastika jail tats, and decided they were going to tell all their buddies that they were going to rob a gun store to get weapons and then go kill 88 black people AND Barack Obama.

What is it with white supremacists. They're always the furthest thing from "supreme".

Generations of inbreeding.

well think about it this way...how awesome would it be to have a third arm? that seems pretty supreme to me.

eating popcorn and playing video games all at once...boo yah!

Yeah, then they could hold down both of their sisters at the same time![i/]

That actually was a punch line from a joke about how Arkansas was the first state to have a nuclear power plant.

I agree with you on this.
I think it is really important that any kind of threat is taken seriously.

Speaking of the Klan, do they have any big plans for a mass exodus to Australia yet?

agents said they disrupted plans that included robbing a gun store

Wasn't there a recent Darwin award winner that tried to rob a gun store? Anyway, these two seem like the type that would be in the running if their plot wasn't foiled.

Robbing a gun store works just fine if you do it on one that is closed and has no guards. I watched a show on Discovery about Hmong street gangs in Minnesota that would first steal a car.

Then sometime after midnight when by previous observation they knew the store had no guards, and police patrols were rare, they drive the stolen car through the front door of the shop, run in and grab lots of guns smashing windows and so on, and be out (by surveillance video) in under 2 minutes, and drive off in another car and have tens of thousands of dollars worth of guns they could not have legally acquired (nearly all being either underage or a felon, or both).

Robbing a gun store while it is open, that is indeed a matter of Darwinian selection.

Remember, this guy wasn't a font of brilliance, either. More like a nutter. All it takes is a gun and the will to use it.

And very lax security around the candidate which it was around Bobby Kennedy. He did not have secret service protection FYI.

Wasn't Robert Kennedy's assassination the catalyst for the Secret Service to protect major presidential candidates.

Is there something symbolic about white tuxedos that I'm not catching or are they just dapper?

I have to admit that I actually Laughed Out Loud when I was reading the news story and came to that part.

I'm pretty sure that Shalome has hit the nail on the head that this was just a case of a couple of white trash wannabes, not any type of 'plot' by the Aryan brotherhood or any of their ilk.

The worst part is that these guys will probably be the superstars of their cell block as the guys that tried to kill Obama.

Their plan was to drive their vehicle as fast as they could toward Obama while shooting at him with rifles from the windows of the car. Both individuals stated they would dress in all white tuxedos and wear top hats while shooting..

I dunno. This plan seems pretty viable. Cuz you know for damn sure the 1989 bitchin' Camaro with NAWS! (BALLZ!) in it could readily stand up to the hail of gunfire from fully-automatic weapons that the secret service carries.

I just can't think in recent memory where I've heard of even remotely semi-credible death-threats being uttered during a US Presidential campaign.

Ah well, the more nearly successful assassin types have also tended to be lone wolf crackpots as well. I mean, David Hinckley? Squeaky Fromme? The two Obama plots we know of seem to have a common thread in methamphetamine.

The upside to this is that the Secret Service and bystanders will be able to see (and smell) them coming. And well, they'll likely tend to fail about as miserably as these two batches of drugged-up morons.

The Oklahoma City bombing was useful to the extent that it put huge swathes of reactionary gun nuts and neo-nazi leaners under law enforcement scrutiny.

I remember a few times as a child when some guy spouting off at a bar about killing whichever President would get reported and later get a hangover visit from the Secret Service.

I dunno. I suppose that gets them into one of the three prison gang blocs, but with regard to one of the others, it kind of makes them into a different sort of "superstar."

Ya know, I never actually thought there might be a video for that song.

Well, these guys also didn't exactly plot in secret. They talked on an internet messageboard, sent each other emails back and forth, and told their buddies what they were going to do. Heh.
