The U.S. death toll in Iraq has surpassed the number of American soldiers killed during the first three years of the Vietnam War, the brutal Cold War conflict that cast a shadow over U.S. affairs for more than a generation.

And the US will NEVER leave that shadow if the media have anything to say about it. I'm glad at least the article didn't have the mendacity to exclude the point that there's about 7.6 times more troops in Iraq today than there were in Vietnam at the time, and that half of US casualties were inflicted in the 3 week invasion of a large country.

This is actually somewhat funny in an informative manner. far more people died in vietnam when we started calling it a war. In the years mentioned we were merely "sending advisors" over to help.

few fail to realize or accept that Kennedy began the conflict that killed roughly 50,000 Americans. Sure, maybe more have died sooner so far. But can you actually use those number as a predictor for the rest? Any good scientific findings must be able to be replicated for validity. I mean we weren't involved in a war at first during Vietnam. we were just helping with advisors and look at how many of them died without an actual war going on?

Actually, the first American 'advisors' came in under Eisenhower. Second, the Iraq war/invasion was started by a group of men, none of whom ever served any combat. One would wonder why the Bush family isn't fighting in a patriotic act. There are people who seem to be content that there are 800 American deaths (& counting) and 9,000 American casualties (& counting), as well as 50,000 Iraqi casualties (& counting). Book your ticket to Baghdad, buddy, if you're so anxious to see people die.

I'm not anxious to see people die. I'm merely commenting on the numbers. And I'm pretty sure it's not a requirement to have been in combat to send troops to combat. If it were I'd be happy. Hillary wouldn't ever have a chance. By the way, your numbers for Iraq are wrong.

Nah. Just a guy that has seen combat and doesn't like the numbers to be padded. Oh and I forgot to give you credit for correcting me on Kennedy earlier. I just remember when the war officially began and knew we had advisors there beforehand.

You can find the numbers here http://web1.whs.osd.mil/mmid/casualty/castop.htm

As of October's count there are 219 Hostile deaths. 123 non-hostile deaths for a total of 342 and 1,519 wounded in action.
