Forget the DNC. Forget the GOP. Here is the REAL convention!

There's no room at the Xcel Energy Center for maverick Ron Paul, so his acolytes have packed their cars, hitched rides on "Ronvoys" and will pitch tents at Ronstock '08 in defiance of next week's GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn.

Ronin', Ronin', Ronin, keep them convoys comin'
Reality ain't got nothin'!
Paul on!!!

*sung to the tune of Rawhide*

"No matter how much our message is ignored or ridiculed, as was done in the campaign, no matter how much they did to us, it only energized our grass roots," Paul said.

"No matter how many times we're slapped in the face with 'reality' or 'facts' or 'history' we shall keep going!"

Well, Ron Paul is aware of what he represents. But yeah, his supporters...

"The Founding Fathers envisioned a robustly Christian yet religiously tolerant America, with churches serving as vital institutions that would eclipse the state in importance." -Ron Paul

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion;

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

" John Adams, Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli (spoilered bit included for context)

Rambling below:

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
Fun fact: That treaty received the third ever recorded unanimous vote in the Senate. Though it's worth noting that the point of the treaty wasn't encompassed in that whole article, they may have felt it wasn't worth fighting over the wording of one article. Then again, imagine if a government document written today had those words. Wonder if that'd raise a fuss.

Ron Paul's perception of reality is a bit skewed. Sometimes he's right. Often he's wrong. But he's certainly not alone in any of his views, so he can't exactly be called crazy. Just... well, wrong.

He wants to get rid of the IRS and I recall reading somewhere that he wanted to make divorce illegal.( although I'm not sure how legit that actually is.) I think he's nuts, personally. and Unrealistic, too.

It would be entertaining to sit in the stands and watch it all unfold; perhaps with John Madden doing the play by play. Very funny these devotees...

"See now he's gonna need to get to the center of the stage, near that podium, because that's where the microphone is. Without that microphone, there's no way everyone's going to hear him."
"Thanks John."

I'd like to make a joke about him not needing one because there are only a couple people there, but we all know that's wish-thinking.

Can't seem to find anything about him and divorce. I'll suspend my belief on that one until I see otherwise, I don't think even an anti-choice "individualist" like Ron Paul would go that far.

Don't know how I missed this earlier:

Ron Paul said:
"Certainly the drafters of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, both replete with references to God, would be aghast at the federal government's hostility to religion."

Here's the Constitution. Press Control F, type in "god" and see what happens. I thought he was supposed to know this thing.

Most of the founding fathers were deists - that is, they believed that some creative force exists but would not intervene or even necessarily care about or be aware of the events of reality. The Declaration of Independence is written to coincide with that. That's why it says, "the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God" rather than just "God", or "Jesus Christ", or "Allah", or "Zeus". It's intentionally vague, even invoking an air of Spinoza's pantheism.

A little more research and you'll find that all of the big name founding fathers, even the ones who were Christians, rabidly supported the separation of church and state.

James Madison in a private letter:

"And I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in shewing that religion & Govt will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together."

So keep on dreaming, Ron.

What pisses me off about him is that he promotes such things as "states' rights" and "limited government" not to protect individual liberties, but to limit them. Yet it seems many of his followers don't look past the surface to what he really says.

I'm a bit disappointed that the Independence Party of Minnesota had this on their calendar. Something about "shared basic principles." True; the MNIP and Ron Paul share a certain underlying philosophy. Superficially. But in practice they couldn't be farther apart.

I passed the Target Center when they had the meeting. There was a dude holding an enormous Ron Paul poster with "SUCKS" painted on top of it. There was also "Waah! I want money!" in little letters. I gave him a thumbs up. Hilarious.

I also saw a girl walking out of there wearing a Guy Fox costume (a la V for Vendetta).

I don't get the Guy Fawkes thing. Don't people know he was a religious terrorist? The King was Protestant, Fawkes was Catholic, that's why he did it. He wasn't some freedom fighter or anarchist. Just a crazy asshole.

Oh wait. A crazy religious asshole that people completely mislabel as a freedom fighter. Nevermind, I get why you'd wear that at a Ron Paul convention.

I believe they were trying to reference V for Vendetta. Either way it doesn't make sense.

Oh I get that, I just don't know why Alan Moore (the creator) chose to have V wearing a Guy Fawkes mask. V is supposed to stand for anarchy, Guy Fawkes wanted a theocracy... very much NOT based on freedom.

But trying to figure out Alan Moore is an exercise in frustration. The guy wrote a series of porn comics that has Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz in multiple orgies.
