(I didn't see anything on the boards about this, so I apologize if this is old news.)

The Obama campaign sent me this email earlier this week:

------ Original Message ------

From: David Plouffe

Subject: Barack's VP: Be the First to Know

Dear [my real name]--

Barack Obama is about to make one of the most important decisions of this campaign -- choosing a running mate.

You have helped build this movement from the bottom up, and Barack wants you to be the first to know his choice.

Sign up today to be the first to know:

http://my.barackobama.com/vp

You will receive an email the moment Barack makes his decision, or you can text VP to 62262 to receive a text message on your mobile phone.

Once you've signed up, please forward this email to your friends, family, and coworkers to let them know about this special opportunity.

No other campaign has done this before. You can be part of this important moment.

Be the first to know who Barack selects as his running mate.

Thanks,

David

The same announcement has been made on his twitter account.

My initial reaction was something along the lines of "Fucking awesome!" but now there's a small part of me that's feels like it almost cheapens it. Almost as if he's announcing it on his MySpace page first, or on TRL. I can't really put my finger on why exactly I'm a little weirded out by this, let alone articulate it.

Is this part of the evolution of how we use technology, or is it just an attempt to reach out to a younger demographic? (Is that the same thing?)

The only reason we view new technologies as puerile is because the young are the quickest to adopt them.

Not that involving young people in the process is something to be ashamed of in the first place.

Whatever ... all I know is that I'M going to be the first to know!

I think it's kind of cool that he's doing it, but you can be assured that the moment those bajillion texts get sent, a press release will be made through the traditional media.

In my eyes, it's no different from the Obama email that told me about the Edwards or Gore endorsements a few hours before they stepped on the stage to speak, but concurrent to the news being made generally available through the old channels.

Kennedy was the first to make effective use of computer technology in his campaign. Seems like Obama is going to the next step.

I wonder if McCain's veep will be announced on a stone carving or papyrus.

I was thinking just a short series of grunts.

True. It wasn't so much that I viewed this as puerile (shit, I twitter), but I was concerned that the media would try to spin it into him being gimmicky and question his credibility.

I finally have a candidate I'm excited about, and I think I'm just worried something ridiculous will cost him the election. I'm in the bible belt, so between the "terrorist fist jab" and the inbox full of "OMG he's a muzlim who hates soldierz!!!1" emails I get from my family and coworkers on a near daily basis, I'm a little edgy. November can't get here fast enough.

If anyone sends you an email saying you should be afraid of an Obama presidency, send them this.

That's awesome! That needs to go to everyone, everywhere.

I agree that it's awesome, and that everyone needs to see it, but "terrifying" is a word that I would toss in there, too.

Seems a bit too much like fearmongering to me, especially when Scott Ritter starts talking about specific American cities being nuked.

Also, why did they use music most commonly heard in movie trailers?

A former UN weapons inspector in Iraq lays out a very realistic scenario that leads to the annihilation of "at least one" American city, starting with a series of events that seems likely under McCain. I wouldn't use the word "fearmongering" to describe that, only because "fearmongering" implies that there isn't real reason to be afraid.

Also, why did they use music most commonly heard in movie trailers?

This is why:

Back on the topic at hand, though...

I think this shows a tremendous understanding of current technology on the part of his campaign. That's not surprising considering his campaign has a whole lot of young people deeply involved in it, and that Lawrence Lessig is one of his consultants, but it's refreshing. Beyond that, I noticed that he's not announcing it via twitter. He's announcing via his own campaign's SMS and email system. That's a big deal, because it means that he's establishing an SMS campaign infrastructure, which is incredibly powerful, and a really great idea. One more campaign innovation from the fresh ideas candidate.

Maybe he's doing a dry run for a new "peoples position" on his cabinet.

Should we move troops from Iraq to Afghanistan?

Eh?

I was swapping the placement of the comments, did you perhaps catch them when I was in the middle of that and they both said the same thing?

That's a little overdramatic, but hearing Wesley Clark's opinion of McCain was golden.

Cool. I see it as a way to start a million little conversations about the campaign all over the country at the same time. Instead of people hearing the announcement while at home watching the news, they get a text during the work or school day, then tell the people around them, conversations ensue, interest in the campaign increases etc etc.

Umm, that person "A" is an idiot, lier, and all around no-good-nik, and probably horrible at the job they are trying to get, does not prove that person "B" will be any good at it, or that he is innocent of all the things he is being accused of that you suggested that you-tube clip as a reply to.

If the Democrats were serious about ending the war and not fighting more wars, then they would have nominated Dennis Kucinich, or should have switched parties and voted Ron Paul. Neither of the major party candidates is committed to ending the current Iraq war in a timely manner.

You are all drinking Military-Industrial Complex kool-aid, even if you think you are for peace, but are unwilling to get off your duffs and elect a real peace candidate.

Good thing I am in Antarctica.
