Should have worded it this way - ::long embarassed sigh::... it wasn't the kind of sigh one might expect from a 13 yr. old fangirl, I promise... puke

I asked the original poster whether they were associated specifically with his show or with the station that broadcasts it in general. Keep in mind, he's nationally syndicated, boycotting every sponsor of every station will be near impossible. I have no problem boycotting companies that he specifically supports, but lets be clear. That list looks a bit suspicious to me given my experience with him.

The sponsor list was taken directly from the TRN (Talk Radio Network) website. While I do not know whether or not they all 'sponsor' Michael Savage is unclear.

BTW, they appear to have taken down the list of sponsors (or I simply can't find it anymore).

It was originally linked to from here:

So, what if one of the people who work at the radio company has a kid with autism, and by boycotting his show we significantly fuck up the company's revenue forecast, and so that person gets laid off, and then they can't afford autism pills. Then the joke is on us.

I heard Budwiser, Aflac and Home Depot were direct sponsors of his show and Aflac has pulled support, along with several radio stations. I also heard Home Depot has pulled it's sponsorship, but I can't find any citation of that yet.

If you really don't like the idea of boycotting sponsors, you could surely come up with a more plausible scenario by which to play devil's advocate.

...that is, if you're actually being serious. My monitor's not so good at showing me how far posters have their tongues planted into their cheeks.

I hate to be a complete dick here, but has anyone else noticed that Autism is the new ADHD? It seems like every asshole with a kid with behavioral problems has Asperger Syndrome or something similar. The same asshole kids had ADHD a few years ago. Pisses me off that people who have children that are truly autistic and need help get lumped in with children that have the diagnosis of the moment.

Reduced social stigma of diagnosis and/or treatment, greater understanding and recognition in the medical community and/or the public, greater incidence in the population, more access to treatment, etc.: These are all valid reasons for increases in the diagnosis of diseases in general which have nothing to do with "trends" or "fads." Every psychological illness in history has gone through a period where people with the condition have been either dismissed as "troubled" (or some variant of the argument) or mis-diagnosed, before their condition was more fully understood and accepted.

ADHD may have been over-treated for a time, because of a lack of understanding about treatments, but that doesn't mean the clinical diagnoses were invalid. Self-diagnosed cases of ADHD have been very common, and that's the key, because it's far more likely for parents to claim their children have ADHD when they don't than for a doctor to diagnose a child with ADHD when it doesn't exist. These uninformed diagnoses are common with disorders like these, because, like many psychological illnesses, many of the symptoms are part of normal behavior, but rise to the level of a disorder when their severity and frequency fall outside normal ranges. Furthermore, the perception of a rash of ADHD diagnoses suddenly spreading across the country probably has more to do with the fact that it was classified in the DSM in our lifetime.

Autism, on the other hand, is identified by abnormal behavior. That is, if children exhibit certain verifiable symptoms, then something isn't right. Following that recognition comes specific identification within the spectrum of autism-related disorders (which includes, but is not limited to autism itself) and determination of the severity. Furthermore, because autism and autism-related disorders have a wide range of manifestation and severity, if you compared two people with even the same autism-related disorder, one might seem almost normal while the other may exhibit very obvious symptoms. That doesn't mean that the person who seems almost normal doesn't have it, or that they don't have more pronounced internal symptoms that aren't readily apparent. Now, autism itself is pretty hard to miss if you're familiar with the symptoms, but it's entirely possible that people with less severe autism-related disorders might simplify their diagnosis by saying they have autism, because it's much simpler than saying you have PDD-NOS, which is much more common. Nevertheless, they're not entirely wrong, since they would still exhibit some of the same symptoms (just not all of them, and not as severe).

In short: ADHD's false diagnoses are probably much less common than you think, but understandable because many of the symptoms reflect normal behavior taken to problematic extremes of frequency and severity; autism is a completely separate phenomenon that is not particularly comparable and which is frequently misunderstood; and neither of them are "fads" or "diagnoses of the moment," and you're extrapolating a world view out of bad media coverage, the blathering of pundits, and limited personal experience.

P.S. I'm sure that as the parent of a baby, you're probably bombarded with information about autism more than most people, simply because most of the symptoms of autism appear before the age of 3 and in the US, autism screening is common. This might be affecting your outlook.
