How can you be modestly self-reliant anyway?

By just doing it, instead of boasting about it?

It's not a quality that lends itself to showing off, though.

And in a religious context, everyone seems to be doing it, because when was the last time God overtly saved anybody?

Idiots

Not that it matters but as long as we're doing side notes, that is an old saying without any real religious significance, kind of the opposite in fact. It's interesting to hear it's misused in other languages as well.

So yeah. Faith healing = lousy remedy.

This is why I don't think we should teach religion till a person 18.

That would interfere with the natural order of progression. First we teach kids about Santa Claus, a benevolent being with supernatural powers who rewards the good, but can also punish the bad.

Then when they outgrow such an obvious myth, we teach 'em ...

Nevermind.

That really annoyed me that I was forced to lie to my kids about that stuff. I mean, I couldn't tell a 3 year old, sorry, no Santa. I probably would have had my kids taken away! They figured it out pretty early on their own.

The only one I was cool with was the tooth fairy. OK, you're a tiny little kid and parts of your body are falling out and there's blood and stuff. FREAK OUT!!! But wait!! You get this FABULOUS loose change collection!!! SWEET!! Kids no longer scared shitless that their head is coming apart. I never figured out what the tooth fairy was for until the first time I had to dig through the couch for some change to slip under the kids pillow summon her for my kids.

Oregon needs to catch up with the times, methinks.

What's that supposed to mean? The article clearly stated that Oregon doesn't allow the use of religious freedom as a defense for child mistreatment. Oregon is also the only state that allows euthanasia, which is what that law above is for, and I absolutely agree with it and think we're progressive for having it.

sorta. on the one hand, you've got verses like Jeremiah 17:5, which warn against trusting solely in yourself. on the other, you've got verses like 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15, which state in no uncertain terms that god don't truck with no layabouts. moreover, the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30 seems to generally contraindicate waiting around for god to handle your business.

Lets not forget that alot of super religous families have alot of 'control' of their childrens lives. Yay sure the kid had legal rights to say that he wanted treatment or not, but sure the parents may have either scared him saying "god will hate you if you get treatment" or "I will disown you if you dont go with what I say" kinda stuff. I think it should be better looked into

I don't think it's parallel. That would imply that there are similarities. surreal The sad thing is how many people really buy into this stuff. How isolated do you have to be to think this event could ever, ever occur?
