Yes, because government employees are full of intelligence and accountability.

Personally, I am more comfortable with bureaucracy driven scumbags than profit driven scumbags in this role. There are things which should be the function of government, and this seems one of them.

Exactly.

So does the security of ambassadors, but we contracted that off to a group of mercenaries.

I'm sorry, but with regards to the prison system, I fail to see a whole lot of difference.
The corporations are still making all the money. It's set up so they can. It seems a hair spit between if the government gives them the money through the front door or the back.

The big problem seems to be lack or oversight, responsibility and accountability.
I think it has been and remains a problem within the government and private run system.
I DO AGREE it's currently worse in the private system. But I don't think you can put the genie back in the bottle at this point. Companies like Wackenhut Corp. have been so deep in, for so long and so influential in government that maintaining the prison system as Government run is little more than a farce and has little to no practical effect on accountability or how the system functions.

The issue for me is transparency. Both private industry and government institutions fuck up and very sadly, in this case, a man died unnecessarily.

When private companies or government entities fuck up, the first reaction includes cover up; keeping the information out of the public eye. Private companies consider themselves governed by the rule of law and the rule of markets, neither of which endorses a policy of humanitarian responsibility. Government entities, by virtue of their funding and support from the nation's peoples (taxes) have a responsibility to those same people, which responsibility includes reflecting the virtues and values of those people. In short, government entities have a responsibility not shared by private organizations.

There are many capitalistic arguments for privatizing portions of government. However, capitalists (and I am one), rarely put any objective ahead of their primary goal; to make money and too often, the desire for profits shortchanges other equally or more important objectives. In short, there are several areas where the role of private business should be limited including, education of our children, the caring of our nation's peoples, the provision of those utilities required by all citizens, and the protection of our nation's citizens.

Those are not socialistic values because I still believe there are many, many ways for capitalists to make money.

not a shock, but worth adding:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government has injected hundreds of foreigners it has deported with dangerous psychotropic drugs against their will, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday, citing medical records, internal documents and interviews with people who have been drugged.

The newspaper said it has identified 250 cases in which the government has, without medical reason, given drugs meant to treat serious psychiatric disorders to people it has shipped out of the United States since 2003.

Involuntary chemical restraint of detainees without medical justification is a violation of some international human rights codes, the Post reported.

apparently, we're taking tips on how best to move prisoners from the pros: a lot of human traffickers drug their victims for easier transport.
